Roundabout construction begins May 4 on SR 17 near Othello
Project will continue until late July with traffic controls and detours in place
OTHELLO – Travelers on State Route 17 near Othello will need to plan for extra time near Cunningham Road, as contractors with the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin construction of a roundabout May 4 until late-July.
The project, which will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at milepost 29 of SR 17, will improve the safety at the intersection for people exiting Othello onto the highway.
The roundabout will reduce the speed of traffic and the severity of collisions at the intersection.
Construction schedule
• Monday, May 4 through Friday, May 8: The intersection of Cunningham Road and SR 17 will remain open, with daytime flagger-controlled traffic.
• Monday, May 11 through completion of the project: One-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals will remain in place throughout the project, including weekends and off-duty hours.
Signs will direct travelers along a detour from Cunningham Road to Lee Road, Booker Road and State Route 26.
The final phase of the work, striping and seeding, will occur at night with the roundabout available to travelers and flagger-controlled traffic when necessary.
This is the third roundabout built in the Othello area this decade. A similar roundabout was built in 2025 at the intersection of First Avenue and SR 26. Another one was built on Bench Road and SR 24 in 2020.
