Today we were called to a local park after several kittens were found abandoned in a carrier. Thankfully they were located by a park ranger.

Abandoning animals is not only cruel — it is illegal in Indiana.

Under Indiana Code 35-46-3-7, knowingly or intentionally abandoning a vertebrate animal is considered animal cruelty and may result in criminal charges. Indiana law defines abandonment as leaving an animal without making reasonable arrangements for long-term care.

If you can no longer care for an animal, please contact the shelter DURING BUSINESS HOURS so we can help direct you to available resources.

Dumping animals in parks, roadsides, or rural areas puts them at risk of:

* starvation
* disease
* predation
* heat exposure
* injury or death

If you have information regarding this abandonment, please contact Morgan County Animal Control.

Please spay and neuter your pets. One unaltered cat can quickly lead to dozens more kittens in our community.
