We Fight. We Win!

The message was loud and clear: “We will not back down.” And “We will move to strike.”

Everyone present gathered for one reason, to stand in solidarity and demand the reinstatement of the six nurses fired from the hospital in Olympia Fields following discussions about organizing.

For the 5th District, the firing of these dedicated healthcare workers represents more than a labor dispute. It is a blatant and vicious attack on the patients who have relied on these nurses for years; patients who know their nurse’s names, trust their care, and have built lasting relationships with them.

The event was deafening not simply because of the chants, but because of the heartbreaking stories shared by nurses who have dedicated 25, 30, and even 35 years of their lives to caring for others.

One nurse shared:

“I gave this hospital 35 years of my life. I retired and came back because of my love for people. Some of my patients have been with me for years. I couldn’t just leave them.”

And that is the beginning, the middle, and the end. Without the nurses at the hospital does not thrive.

Imagine giving decades of your life to an institution, caring for generations of patients, only to be escorted out of the building and told you can no longer enter. Today, some of these same nurses must participate in the rally from the street to avoid being accused of loitering or arrested for simply standing up for their rights.

I spoke with supporters, nurses, and community members about the care these workers provide and the impact their absence could have on patients.

This is bigger than six nurses.

It is about respect. It is about dignity. It is about workers’ rights. It is about patient care.

I also want to acknowledge the elected officials who stood alongside these nurses, workers, patients, and community members in solidarity: Senator Michael E. Hastings, State Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin, State Representative Will Davis, Cook County Commissioner Donna Black Miller 6th District, and our very own
Cook County Commissioner Dr. Kisha E. McCaskill - 5th District.

Their presence mattered.

Leadership is not just about passing legislation or casting a vote. Leadership is about showing up when working people are hurting, when patients are at risk, and when justice demands that we stand together.

To every elected official, nurse, worker, patient, advocate, and community member who showed up today: thank you for standing together.

We fight. We stand together. We will not back down.

And together, we will win.

100 COMPUTERS!!! 100 FAMILIES BLESSED!!! 100 CHILDREN OFF TO AN AMAZING START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR!!!

The day was about more than giving away computers ….it was about creating opportunities, bringing smiles and hope, and making sure our families have the tools they need to succeed.

In partnership with Compudopt and Supervisor Senator Napoleon B Harris III our office was proud to help giveaway 100 brand-new laptops to 100 families in throughout the 5th District..

Families simply registered, answered a few questions, and walked away with a brand-new laptop. This partnership was led with one focus, “help the children start the school year with confidence and the technology they need to learn, grow, and thrive”.

Families also received information about free computer classes available in our community — including classes at Thornton Township for seniors and Harvey Public Library for everyone.

This is what happens when we work together to make sure no family is left behind.

Congratulations to every recipient! Have an amazing school year.

Operation Jericho 2026: Serving the Whole Person

It was truly an honor to help jumpstart Operation Jericho 3.0 right here in my hometown of Harvey. This mission of
Valley Kingdom Ministries International
is about faith, service, and most importantly, showing up for people.

What really stood out to me was the connection between this kind of community outreach and mental health. Life can become overwhelming when families are dealing with food insecurity, financial pressure, housing concerns, family struggles, or simply trying to make it through a difficult season. Those challenges can take a real toll on a person’s mental and emotional well-being.

That is why days like this matter. Bringing resources, food, giveaways, prayer, encouragement, worship, and people who are willing to listen and answer questions directly into the community can make a difference. Sometimes, knowing that someone took the time to come to you, listen to you, and help connect you to a resource is a reminder that you don’t have to face everything alone.

I am grateful to everyone who came together to serve Harvey and the surrounding communities. It was a beautiful example of what can happen when people come together with a heart to serve.

And a special thank you to Pastor
Ray Bady, Kiturah Baker, and the entire VKM team for coordinating this event and helping bring the vision to life.
Thank you for the powerful words you spoke over the City of Harvey. May they resonate and manifest the healing that only this type of an event can bring.

Serving our community means caring for the whole person—mind, body, spirit, and family.

Recently, our team had the opportunity to partner with the Village of Glenwood Mayor Toleda Hart, Senator Napoleon B Harris III, Thornton Township and others.

Food boxes, essential items, and a variety of resources were available to assist families with meeting their household needs. The event also provided an opportunity to engage residents and discuss ways to expand resources and strengthen support throughout our communities.

Together, we’re connecting families to resources and building stronger communities.

Let’s continue working together to move the 5th District forward.
