On Wednesday, May 20, at 6:00 PM at the WSCC–Manistee Campus, the League of Women Voters of Manistee County will host a community conversation exploring the importance of transparency in building and rebuilding trust in local government.

County Commissioners Jeff Dontz and Karen Goodman will join us to discuss the steps the County Commission takes to maintain public trust and ensure transparency. Each commissioner will share how they personally work to build trust as elected leaders and explain the mechanisms the county uses to keep the public informed and engaged.

Owning your own home is the American dream. For some, that dream becomes a nightmare as property values rise and property taxes increase.

On Thursday, March 19, at 5:30 PM, at the Maple Grove Community Center in Kaleva, our community conversation will focus on the challenges we all face.

The conundrum we all face is that rising home and property values create equity that can help us in later life. Homeownership has always been seen as an investment. At the same time, our property taxes go up, during a time when many of us are on fixed or limited incomes.

On Thursday, our panelists will discuss how property values are set, how property taxes in particular, pay for the services we need as well as services necessary to attract new investment in our county, and zero in on one service -- public schools -- to see how they are necessary for investment, how they are financed, and how some of the legislation in Lansing could affect our schools.

Join us for a robust conversation on this critical issue.
