MANCHESTER RESIDENTS THANK MANCHESTER POLICE FOR REJECTING ICE DEPUTIZATION AGREEMENT

Community members gathered at the latest monthly Manchester Police Commission meeting to express their gratitude to local police leadership for declining to participate in a controversial federal immigration enforcement program.

During the public comment segment of the meeting, several residents addressed the Manchester Police Department (MPD) Command Staff, thanking officers for their daily service to the city while praising the leadership's firm stance against signing a 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The federal 287(g) program allows local law enforcement agencies to partner with ICE, effectively deputizing local officers to interrogate, arrest, issue detainers, hold in custody, and transport individuals suspected of civil immigration violations during routine police operations.

Highlighting the impact of federal immigration enforcement in the area, one Manchester resident presented figures to the commission stating that out of 89 people taken into custody by ICE locally over the past two months, only three faced criminal charges.

Manchester Police have long maintained a clear operational boundary regarding federal immigration matters. Under the department's longstanding policy, individuals arrested for criminal offenses are processed solely on those local or state criminal charges, leaving civil immigration enforcement entirely to federal authorities.

While some law enforcement agencies across New Hampshire have opted into the 287(g) agreement, Manchester officials remain committed to keeping local policing separate from federal immigration oversight.

If you can, please come to this tonight. You have to be careful who you vote for. I have a Free Stater who is in the primary with me (Josh Holmes). He has run as a Republican in the past. If you vote a straight party ticket, you are not always voting for who you think you are!!

Part of running for office is completing questionnaires from different organizations who want to learn about you and know where you stand on issues. I am happy to have completed one for Ballotpedia. Be sure to VOTE in the September 8th Primary!

Same home value. Same school district. Very different education property tax bills.

The owner of a $500,000 home in Charlestown is estimated to pay $12,550 in combined state and local education property taxes. In neighboring Acworth, the owner of a home with the same value is estimated to pay $4,565.

That difference is not about how much either community values public education. It reflects the dramatically different abilities communities have to raise revenue from local property taxes.

When school funding depends so heavily on local property wealth, some communities must tax themselves much more heavily to raise far less.

People should not have to choose between supporting strong public schools and remaining in their homes. A fairer state funding system can help communities sustain both.

The House in what might be its last action of the 2026 session, censured Rep. James A. Spillane, R-Deerfield, for defamatory and demeaning remarks he made about fellow legislators on his social media (X) account.
