Libertyville Methodist Churches through the Years
In 1838 a group of Libertyville families crowded into a local cabin to discuss plans for a school and church. It took several years to come up with a plan for building.
On January 3rd, 1846 the Methodist Episcopal congregation purchased 4 acres which cost $8.75. This 4-acre plot of land was located 4 tenth of a mile South of town on the East side of Douds Road. It is unknown if the structure was built of brick or log, but clippings agree that it cost a sum of $500. The Church was used for worship on Sundays, and for school classes during the week.
In 1901 a large church was built at 304 East Maple, this new building had beautiful stained-glass windows, large seating pews with space for the church to grow. In 1968 the Methodist Episcopal Church merged United Brethren Church and became known as the United Methodist Church which remained so until 1978 when the United Methodist Church and the rural church of Mt Zion merged then changing the name to Faith United Methodist.
During the year of 2004 plans started being made to build a new church just East of the 1901 structure. The congregation moved into the new church June 12, 2005. During the razing of old church, a time capsule was discovered. Thus, a new concrete bench was constructed at the front of the new church containing items from 1901 and 2005.
Along with the many name changes during the years there are some points of interest:
*The church bell from 1851 is still being used
*There have been over 60 Pastors
*Much of stained glass incorporated in newest church
*Some pews kept out of 1901 church
*The time capsule in the bench at front of church
*Kids church during worship
*Active Women's group
*Weekly bible study
In 2023 the Faith United Methodist Church disaffiliated from the conference and became Faith Methodist Church, which is still a vibrant mission in the community with everyone welcome.
