We’re sharing this thoughtful invitation from Somers resident Dan Cassano about the Piedmont Photography Show currently on display:
2026 Piedmont Photography Show
This is not a review, but an invitation by a local Somers resident
By Dan Cassano — May 13, 2026
There is something for everyone at the Piedmont Photography Show on Main Street in Somers, CT. Flamingos, dancing bears, ducks, and a friendly fox are just some of the subjects captured by these photographers.
Take a moment to pull your head away from your portable device and breathe in a tranquil seaside, a lotus blossom, a farmhouse sunset, and a field of sunflowers—not from Topeka, but right here in Enfield, CT. These images reflect human perspectives from our own environment, framed in a way that will stir your soul.
According to juror Frank Zaremba, “This gallery features a diverse collection of images demonstrating thoughtful use of lighting, composition, and color, along with impressive attention to detail.”
I attended the opening, presented by the Somers Cultural Commission, and was astonished by the quality and quantity of outstanding photographs. Many deserve top ratings, and I can’t imagine how anyone could judge among so many exceptional works.
While I am not a professional critic, I’d like to share a few impressions. These artists clearly waited for the perfect light to illuminate barns and lighthouses. Others captured moments that reflect the times we are living in. One striking piece by Arthur Backstrom shows a young woman reading a document as the American flag reflects across her shirt. Another photograph captures a woman standing in protest at a “No Kings” rally.
Many artists ventured beyond our area as well—capturing scenes from New Zealand to Algeria—while others found beauty in everyday local settings.
I encourage you to step away from your devices and reconnect with the real world. You may even find a piece to take home or give as a gift. I was so inspired that I purchased a framed photograph for my mother’s upcoming 95th birthday.
There’s a photo by Pat Bachetti titled “Because Wherever Life Takes You…” It feels like the perfect invitation to begin your journey.
The Photography Show is wrapping up its two-week run this week:
📍 Piedmont Hall, 612 Main Street, Somers
📅 May 14–17
🕙 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Don’t forget to vote for your favorite photograph! The People’s Choice Award will be announced on Sunday by Show Chairman Neil Connell.
