Today, in observation of National Police Week, Mahnomen County Sheriff's Office's Deputy/Investigator Richard Winkler attended the Northern Valley Law Enforcement Memorial service. Our own fallen officer, Deputy Christopher Dewey, who was shot in the line of duty on February 18, 2009, and passed away from his injuries on August 9, 2010, was memorialized, as well as other fallen officers from MN and ND.

The Mahnomen County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post wrapped up the school year with a range day on Saturday, May 9th. Sheriff Guenther taught fi****ms safety and, along with fi****ms instructor Deputy Saunders, had the students perform drills and a simulated fi****ms qualification course with handguns and rifles. Chief Deputy Bexell and deputies LaFriniere and Nundahl assisted with the safe and successful range day.

The Mahnomen County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post was implemented at the beginning of the school year and had students enrolled from both the Mahnomen and Waubun Public Schools. The Explorers met once a month throughout the school year and learned about a career in law enforcement. In February the Explorers took a field trip to Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls to explore the criminal justice program. Two of the graduating students have enrolled into criminal justice programs for next year.

This last year was a great pilot program year and we look forward to expanding and improving the Explorer program for the next school year.

If you receive a text message stating that you've received a citation from a county in Minnesota, it is a scam. Do not respond, and do not give any information, especially financial information. A county will NOT ask you to pay a citation through text message.

Sheriff Josh Guenther recently had the opportunity to read to the Mahnomen Public School 3rd grade class. The 3rd graders were very receptive to Sheriff Guenther and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the time they had together. They asked great questions and they liked the book, "Officer Buckle and Gloria", which is about a police officer and his dog named Gloria. Several of the students stated they would like to be police officers when they grow up!
