For some people, Pride is easy to dismiss.

A parade. A rainbow flag. A month on the calendar.

That is not what it means to me.

I came out at 18 years old under the shadow of Matthew Shepard, who was murdered simply for being gay.

I came out to a world where people debated whether someone like me deserved basic rights. Where politicians built careers on telling people to fear us. Where violence against LGBTQ people was too often treated as the cost of being different.

I came out to a world that had not yet figured out how to love or support our community.

And yet, I never stopped believing it could.

Today, I am married to the love of my life. I have the honor of serving a community that sees me more for what I can contribute than who I love.

That did not happen by accident.

It happened because people before me chose courage over fear and hope over hate.

Pride is not a celebration of being different.

It is a celebration of surviving long enough to be yourself.

My hope is that every child grows up knowing they are worthy of love, belonging, and opportunity exactly as they are.

Because love is not just a feeling.

Love is an action.

And I still believe love will win. 🌈

Happy Pride Month!

Tomorrow, a Brown County Board committee will consider a proposal to establish guardrails on large scale AI data centers.

This is not about being against technology. It’s about protecting ratepayers, workers, natural resources, and local communities before projects of this scale move forward.

I want to thank Christopher Welch for Brown County Supervisor - District 14 for his leadership on this effort and everyone who has helped elevate this conversation across Wisconsin.

Earlier this session, I coauthored AB 722/SB 729 to create similar statewide safeguards. While that bill never received a hearing, these concerns have not gone away.

The best ideas do not always fit neatly into partisan divides. If you believe growth should benefit our communities, not happen at their expense, I encourage you to attend, testify, and support these common sense guardrails.

Keep an eye on your mailbox, Green Bay!

My legislative newsletter and community survey should be arriving soon.

Inside you’ll find updates on some of the work we’ve been doing together, from helping first time homebuyers to expanding workforce opportunities and moving the coal piles out of downtown.

But more importantly, I want to hear from you.

What issues matter most to your family? What challenges should we be tackling next year? What ideas do you have to make our community even stronger?

The best ideas do not come from Madison. They come from the people of Green Bay.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to complete the survey and share your thoughts. I look forward to hearing from you.

Paul was one of those gentle souls who made this world feel softer, kinder, and more hopeful.

I was lucky to know him through the NeighborWorks board, where he served not just as a leader, but as a mentor and a friend. He loved animals deeply. I will always remember the way he talked about his horses and cats with such warmth and joy. But more than anything, Paul believed in good people doing good things for one another.

He showed all of us what love looked like in public. Quiet. Steady. Compassionate. Never asking for attention, just always showing up for others.

Our community was lucky to have him, and his loss will be deeply felt.

Hug your loved ones a little tighter tonight. Sometimes the brightest lights burn too fast, even when they do their work quietly.

May Paul’s memory be a light in this dark world.

Today, a chair was empty at the board meeting.

And while meetings continue, agendas move forward, and motions still get made… it was impossible not to feel the weight of who was missing.

This week, our community lost one of its biggest hearts.

Paul Grall was the kind of person who quietly made things better everywhere he went. Whether he was helping a family find a home, sharing his love of music, talking about horses and sunsets, or simply showing up for others — Paul lived with a warmth that made people feel instantly welcomed.

At NeighborWorks Green Bay, Paul dedicated more than 14 years of service. He wasn’t just a board member — he was part of the foundation that helped shape so much of what NeighborWorks became. He was instrumental in the inception of the counseling and lending committees, helping create opportunities that opened doors for countless families in our community.

And Paul brought people with him. Committee members. Future board members. Families looking for homes. He believed deeply in community and spent years helping others find their place within it. Even his beloved dog, Wolfie, made appearances at committee and board meetings — bringing joy, conversation, and an extra sense of comfort into the room, just like Paul always did himself.

The stories shared this week — of horses, sunsets, laughter, music, kindness, and service — paint such a beautiful picture of a life lived fully and generously.

The NeighborWorks Green Bay Board and staff extend our deepest sympathy to Paul’s family and to the many people throughout this community whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, but his passion for people, community, and connection will continue to live on through the work and relationships he helped build.

Thank you, Paul, for leaving this community better than you found it. ❤️

I am truly overwhelmed by the kindness, love, and support from friends, family, and our incredible Green Bay community. Every text message, phone call, comment, and well wish meant more to me than I can fully put into words.

In difficult moments, love always finds a way to shine through, and all of you reminded me of that these past few days.

I am especially grateful for my husband, who made sure I slowed down long enough to heal, and for the amazing nurses, doctors, and medical staff whose care has me recovering quickly.

I’m doing well, healing fast, and knowing me, I will probably be back to a full schedule sooner than many of you would prefer. Thank you all for making this old man feel so deeply loved and supported. Green Bay truly knows how to take care of one another, and I am so grateful to call this community home.

With deep sorrow, yet also with deep gratitude and hope, we at Casa ALBA Melanie mourn the passing of Father Ken De Groot, O. Praem., whose vision, compassion, and unwavering faith played a foundational role in the founding of Casa ALBA Melanie Hispanic Resource Center.
Father Ken lived a life rooted in service, humility, and love for others. He believed deeply in the dignity of every person and in the importance of creating spaces where families felt welcomed, supported, and seen. His gentle spirit, thoughtful wisdom, contagious humor, and quiet leadership touched countless lives across our community.
For many of us, Father Ken was more than a founder or faith leader, he was a true friend to so many. At St. Willebrord Parish, he opened his heart and the doors to the immigrant community and continued to be an advocate beyond his ministry. He was a steady presence, a compassionate listener, and someone who genuinely believed in the power of community and human connection. The seeds he helped plant through Casa ALBA Melanie continue to grow every day through the families we serve, the hope we nurture, and the lives that are transformed within these walls.
Today, we entrust him to eternal peace, trusting that he has been welcomed home by the God he served so faithfully throughout his life. He touched so many lives in our community and he will be dearly missed, may he rest in peace.

"I think the simplest way to put it is, it would have put the next budget into a tougher position, a genuinely tougher position."

Our president Jason Stein spoke to Wisconsin Public Radio about how a failed bipartisan state budget deal would've affected state finances, had it been enacted. (Story link in comments).

The belief that people come here to work and they come from all different places to work in Green Bay is not new,” said state Rep. Amaad Rivera-Wagner, a freshman lawmaker who co-drafted the bill. “Our farmers have always used migrant workers, and we’ve always had folks from other backgrounds and countries come into Green Bay.”
