Women In Focus, Inc. Women In Focus, Inc. is a Dane County, WI organization dedicated to promotion of educational excellence and healthy development of children of color.

Women In Focus Inc. is a 501(c) (3) organization whose mission since 1983 is to support the education of youths of color in the Madison community. In January 1986, Women In Focus Inc. held its first “I Have A Dream” Ball at the Great Hall of the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union. The Ball was a formal event that honored the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream of a bright future

for America’s youth. This event has become an annual fundraiser for scholarships which provide financial support to students of color seeking a higher education. Initially, our scholarships were limited, but have grown due to the increasing success of the Ball. In thirty one years, we have awarded 287 scholarships for a total of $432,500 and each spring, we formally recognize the students and their families at a Scholarship Reception. Since 2011, Women In Focus Inc. has been contributing to the WIF Scholarship Endowment Fund housed at the Madison Community Foundation. We intend to add to this fund so we will be able to award more scholarships for students of color in perpetuity. The Literacy Program represents our continuing commitment and focus on the importance of reading for early education. From 2001-2007, dedicated volunteers spent about three hours each week reading to young children in the waiting room of the Access Community Health Center. Each child was given a book to keep and parents were encouraged to continue to read to their children at home. Beginning in 2008, the program moved to the YWCA in Madison where we hold monthly activity sessions with mothers and children to encourage reading and we continue to donate new books to each child. also distributes books to children in the community, at the annual Juneteenth and other events. Our programs are supported through donations, grants and partnerships with other community organizations. Please see our website www.womeninfocus.net for more information.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Women in Focus I Have a Dream Ball. On this meaningful weekend, we gathered not only to celebrate our community, but to honor the enduring legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and his call to dream boldly, act courageously, and invest in opportunity for future generations.

Because of your presence, generosity, and belief in educational access, this evening was filled with joy, purpose, and possibility. Together, we affirmed that Dr. King’s dream lives on through action—through scholarships, through community, and through our shared commitment to equity and justice.

On this MLK Day, we are deeply grateful for each of you who stood with us. Thank you for being part of the dream and helping us turn hope into opportunity. 💜

This season, we are filled with gratitude—for our scholars, donors, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners who make our mission possible. Because of you, dreams are nurtured, barriers are removed, and futures are transformed through education.
