Have you ever wondered what the roads used to be like? Well, then this Macon Monday is for you. In 1907-1908, Macon began dragging the streets with a log drawn by horses, while the ground was muddy. Traffic was then kept off the road until the road dried or froze, resulting in a solid, smooth road for a brief time.

Between 1909-1913, a group of Macon and Moweaqua men (including Van Gundys, J.J. Klein, Henry Kemmeely and several other Macon business men; “Doug” Porter of Moweaqua and Joseph of South Wheatland township) pooled funds to buy oil for a test road. The road was prepped by the Macon and South Wheatland townships, and an old water tank was fitted for a perforated pipe to spread the oil. After the road was completed, the city found improvement from the dirt roads. This prompted the city and townships to create a plan to get the community “out of the mud.”

The roads continued to be oiled until 1934, when gravel roads were put in under the watch of the Macon highway commissioner, Don Overlin, and another commissioner, Bud Lancaster. During this time Macon received funds from the state for gasoline tax and Front St. was paved with “Black Top” road.

On Thursday May 28 as usual, we did not open till 1:30, and our closed sign was displayed. We were notified before that time, our door was unlocked. After watching our cameras playback, we noticed the book delivery driver did not get the door locked. Thank you to those patrons that saw my van in the parking lot and was concerned for my safety and made sure no one was on site. ( vicki and I went to Champaign for morning seminar). Times like this we are thankful for our cameras. We saw how many people came in and we're lucky they were respectful.

Happy Memorial Day! Our Macon Monday is dedicated to all who have served. In 1918, Macon became one of the first towns in Macon county to have a “roll of honor.” The honor roll contained the “names of all the Macon boys in the service.” The original roll of honor is pictured below. (Picture from a scrapbook that was donated to the library.)

The American Legion has a roll of honor for those from Macon who were in WWII. This is pictured below, to enlarge the names of those included, you can find them on this link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YXo35EEX7J_91_G7YZ8fvHK0-lB9s3c41M8jVrNbSrI/edit?usp=sharing.
(Disclaimer: These are older records, and writing can be hard to decipher. If you find any errors, please contact us so that we can make corrections.)

The South Macon Public Library would like to honor all of our Macon service members. We have started a recognition board at the library. If you have a Veteran you would like to honor, please send us a message or drop by the library. We are excited to share our first one in the pictures below.
