SIDEWALKS ARE NOT LEFTOVER SPACE, THEY ARE INFRASTRUCTURE

Sidewalk systems enable daily living activities in city systems.

Sidewalks can be designed for safety, access, and even comfort with shade and trees. With walkable and safe sidewalks, social activities can occur.

Safe and easy access to a pedestrian environment promotes physical activity, and decreases injuries and negative outcomes in public health.

Research shows that tree cover, barriers, and unbroken paths make the streets more social, improve comfort and walkable.

When sidewalks are viewed as leftover space, their many functions are destroyed.

But, when we reframe sidewalks as necessary infrastructure, we end up improving the whole system.

WE COMPLAIN ABOUT DISORDER, BUT WE DESIGN DISORDER INTO OUR STREETS.

When utilities, access points, and sidewalks are designed in isolation, walking becomes chaotic.

Disorder isn’t caused by users, it’s produced by fragmented systems.
✅ Infrastructure lacks coordination
✅ Walking paths constantly break
✅ Private access overrides public movement
✅ No consistent pedestrian standard
✅ Confusion becomes structural

What if street order started with design accountability, not enforcement?

This isn't to blame the GLTC. I know there were a lot of contributing factors. That said, this does not serve our community. Please, ride and support the system. Apply to drive if capable. Our city council should be looking at solutions, but I have little faith in them, more faith in us.

Attention GLTC riders: Sunday service is temporarily suspended at this time. Beginning May 3, 2026, GLTC will not operates service on Sundays, including fixed-route bus service, paratransit service, and GLTC Flex. Regular service continues Monday through Saturday.
