Metro Council just made a mistake. The Planning & Zoning committee just voted to table a proposed 6-month data center moratorium from Councilwoman Jennifer Chappell.

I voted no to table; I was ready to vote yes on the moratorium. Frustratingly, I was in the queue to speak when the motion to table was approved. Here's what I planned to say:

This was an opportunity to be proactive *and* responsive to a top bipartisan concern. Residents are watching cities and municipalities deal with data centers - such as Middletown's moratorium - and getting only eerie silence from Louisville. Recommendations were promised six months ago. Now we'll get them "hopefully next week."

When we let a previous proposed moratorium die of old age, we didn't look strategic, we looked feckless.

The proposed 6-month timeline is modest, really giving only enough time to receive recommendations from the Planning Commission, hold a public comment period, and move them through the legislative process.

People are just asking for room to breathe and learn best practices, for reassurance that we will get it right.

Please join me in saying farewell and thanks to Geoff Wohl, longtime legislative assistant in District 10.

This week, he retires. I feel so lucky that Geoff stayed on with me after serving with former Councilman Pat Muvihill for two terms. He was an invaluable resource for me to ask so many questions to.

For over 10 years, Geoff has helped hundreds of constituents navigate issues big and small.

At our last council meeting, I was able to present him with a proclamation to honor his exemplary service to Louisville. Now he will be spending more time with his grandkids, Luna and Max, and his workshop.
