Councilmember Ysabel Jurado today issued a statement responding to the the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s announcement that bulk food waste removal is complete at the Lineage Warehouse in Boyle Heights:

“A public-health deadline should mean something. The City gave Lineage 45 days to remove the biohazard food waste; today is day 60 on the City’s timeline.

AQMD has now verified bulk removal, but that is overdue progress—not a completed cleanup—and it does not erase two months of odors, pests, and disruption. Lineage now has seven days to remove debris, power-wash, and disinfect Freezer 1. The City’s 90- and 120-day deadlines still stand.

We will keep pressing for independent verification, consequences, and the relief and accountability needed to make Boyle Heights whole.”

Here’s to 40 incredible seasons of Grand Performances 💙

Started with the simple but powerful belief that world class art should belong to everyone, Grand Performances has brought generations of Angelenos together under the Downtown skyline to dance, sing, and discover the artistic vibrancy of every corner of the world.

Young artists who got one of their first big opportunities on that stage have gone on to become some of this city’s most celebrated performers. And every single summer, Grand Performances keeps creating those moments all over again.

I was proud to honor this incredible LA tradition especially as Grand Performances celebrates the indelible legacy of Ritchie Valens this weekend. Their performance not only pays homage but helps his timeless trailblazing, rebellious, soulful spirit continue to resonate in his home and beyond.

Thank you for making Downtown Los Angeles not just a place people pass through, but a place people experience.

Downtown residents should not have to live beside properties that repeatedly put the community and first responders at risk.

LAFD reports seven fires since December 2024 at 1220 and 1246 S. Hope Street. LAPD data show 13 reported crimes and 51 calls across 1220, 1224 and 1246 S. Hope Street from January 2023 through August 15, 2026.

I have formally urged the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners to designate these properties public nuisances, an important step toward enforceable corrective action and accountability.

The Board is expected to consider the matter at a special hearing on Tuesday, August 25 at 9:30 AM at 201 N Figueroa, Room 900. You can read the letter my office sent to the Commissioners at the link in my bio, and I’m inviting you to join me and our DTLA community partners at the hearing to urge the commissioners to designate these properties as nuisances.

My office is continuing to coordinate with LADBS, LAPD, and community stakeholders. We will keep pushing for hazards to be addressed, the areas to remain secured, and compliance to be verified both for these properties as well as throughout the area.

The goal is safer conditions on the ground, not more paperwork.

Today, the City Council adopted five of our Boyle Heights fire recovery motions that turn the lessons of this disaster into action.

They pursue funding for smoke remediation, prepare trusted community leaders to respond during emergencies, strengthen our automatic public-alert system, prevent residents from being penalized for moving vehicles to make way for emergency responders, and improve DASH service so people are not left waiting outdoors in unsafe conditions.

This is progress, but progress is not recovery, and today is not the finish line.

We’re continuing to deliver relief, demand accountability, and fix the failures this disaster exposed. The burden of this recovery cannot be left to residents who have already carried it for far too long.

Boyle Heights was given a 45-day deadline for the rotting food at the Lineage warehouse to be removed. Based on the latest information we have, Lineage is set to miss it.

I recognize the significant progress crews have made, and I want the remaining food removed immediately. But almost on time is not the same as on time—and residents who have endured weeks of odors, pests, disruption and uncertainty deserve accountability.

The Mayor established this requirement through her executive order, and I support her using the enforcement, cost-recovery and accountability tools available when it is not met. I also welcome additional resources for Boyle Heights, but assistance cannot substitute for accountability.

Food removal is only the first milestone. We will keep tracking the cleanup, verification, structural debris removal, environmental clearance, and the work of making this community whole.
