Archaeologists excavating at the Hisardere Necropolis near ancient Nicaea (present-day İznik, Turkey) uncovered a 3rd-century C.E. hypogeum (underground chamber tomb) featuring a rare fresco of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.

Key Details of the Discovery

​Depiction & Style: The fresco depicts Jesus as a youthful, beardless figure dressed in a Roman tunic with a goat draped over his shoulders, flanked symmetrically by grazing goats amidst flora. This visual style reflects early Greco-Roman art conventions rather than the later bearded imagery that became standard.

​Historical Significance: Created prior to the official legalization of Christianity under Emperor Constantine in 313 C.E., the "Good Shepherd" motif allowed early Christian believers to subtly express their faith and hope of salvation without invoking outlawed Christian symbols like the cross.

​Uniqueness: While Good Shepherd imagery was widely used in Roman catacombs during the Early Christian period, this fresco represents the only known intact depiction of its kind discovered in Anatolia (Asia Minor).

​Tomb Context: Located behind the kline (a terracotta funerary platform), the barrel-vaulted tomb walls also feature intricate floral patterns, birds, and portraits reflecting local aristocratic funerary customs.

Dated to around 200 CE, 𝔓46 is the oldest surviving manuscript of Paul's letters. Its 86 surviving leaves are carefully preserved by the Chester Beatty and the University of Michigan Library, where CSNTM digitized the manuscript in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Farmers have planted the same ground at Presidio, Texas for about 3,500 years without a break.

The place is called La Junta de los Rios. It sits where the Rio Conchos runs into the Rio Grande. The two rivers drop fresh silt there every year and leave the soil rich.

Corn farmers settled it around 1500 BC, and villages grew on both banks. When Spanish parties came through in the 1500s they found towns already farming, not empty country.

Juan Dominguez de Mendoza and Father Nicolas Lopez arrived in 1683. They set up seven missions at seven pueblos along the river. Lopez said the first Christmas Mass in Texas there that year.

People still farm those fields. It is the oldest ground worked without a break in the whole country, and almost no Texas classroom says so.

«Los luteranos y los ortodoxos creen que Cristo se ofreció a sí mismo como un sacrificio "una vez y para siempre" -ephapax- (Heb. 7,27; 9,12; 10,10; cf. 10,14).

Si bien los luteranos usan el lenguaje del sacrificio con menos frecuencia que los ortodoxos, ambos pueden estar de acuerdo en que la Eucaristía es un sacrificio en el sentido de que

1) Es Cristo, no el sacerdote celebrante, quien ofrece y se ofrece como sacrificio

2) El sacrificio de expiación de Cristo se hace de una vez por todas con respecto a Dios

3) Se promulga sacramentalmente para que sus beneficios se distribuyan a los creyentes cada vez que se celebra la Eucaristía.

Tanto los ortodoxos como los luteranos también consideran la Eucaristía como un sacrificio de acción de gracias y alabanza (Heb. 13,15).

La teología luterana puede hablar de una transformación (mutatio) del pan y el vino en el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo (Apología X, 2; XXIV). La teología ortodoxa profesa un cambio real (metabole) del pan y el vino en el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo…
