For those who weren’t able to attend last night’s Republican candidate forum, I wanted to share the speech I gave. My heart is truly full. From the beautiful décor to the wonderful food and the incredible energy in the room, it was such a meaningful evening.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside each candidate and, most importantly, to speak directly with all of you. Thank you for your time, it means more than I can express!

Good evening, and thank you to the Republican Club for hosting tonight's candidate forum. My name is Megan Swander, and I am running for Polk County District Clerk. I am a lifelong resident of Polk County, a 2007 graduate of Livingston High School, and a proud mom of two. I earned my Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Angelina College and I bring 11 years of hands-on experience inside our local courts.

I worked for 8 years as a legal secretary/trial associate in the District Attorney's Office, handling felony case preparation, drafting indictments, bench warrants, Governor’s warrants, plea paperwork, and working closely with law enforcement agencies across the county. For nearly the past three years, I’ve served as a deputy court clerk in the District Clerk’s Office. I manage court records, assist judges and attorneys, prepare court orders and warrants, as well as support jury services.

Being a court clerk is far more than an 8-to-5 job. When court runs past 5:00, we stay until proceedings are finished, and even then, there is often another hour of work before the day truly ends. I do this work every day, and I understand the system from both sides of the courtroom and behind the clerk's desk. I know how critical this office is to the justice system.

Management is important; but in this office, understanding court procedure is essential.
Experience matters! The District Clerk position demands commitment, dedication, and a deep understanding of the work, not only in the courtroom but behind the scenes as well. With 11 years of courtroom and clerk experience, I know what works and where improvements can be made.

This office is not political, but it is critical.

The District Clerk is the foundation of the courts. This job is not just paperwork. Accurate records protect constitutional rights, support our judges, and directly impact public safety. Warrants, protective orders, and bond conditions must be correct and current. When they are not, our law enforcement officers may walk into dangerous situations without knowing it. That risk is real, and it is unacceptable.

I am running because Polk County deserves a knowledgeable, dependable, and transparent District Clerk. If elected, I will work to modernize the District Clerk’s Office by expanding secure online access to public records while protecting confidential information. I will implement a clear, secure online payment system and improve efficiency so citizens can access the information they are already entitled to without unnecessary delays. I also believe in properly training and cross-training staff so our office runs efficiently, reduces wait times, and serves the public with professionalism and respect.

I was raised with faith, strong values, and a belief in hard work and personal responsibility. Working in the courts has taught me that behind every case number is a real person… families, victims, and individuals who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about showing up, doing the work, telling the truth, and doing what’s right.

I am ready to lead, ready to serve, and committed to protecting the integrity of our justice system. The opportunity to serve as your next District Clerk is not something I take lightly; I would be honored to earn your trust and your vote as your next Polk County District Clerk.

I humbly ask for your vote and your continued support. It would mean so much to me. My name is Megan Swander, and I’m number two on the ballot. Thank you.

The District Clerk plays a critical role in supporting the entire justice system. When the clerk lacks the knowledge or experience to ensure accuracy, confidence in the system begins to break down. The safety and even the lives of our law enforcement officers depend on accurate court records and timely criminal history reporting. These records are not just paperwork.

Warrants, protective orders, and bond conditions must be current and correct. When they are wrong or delayed, officers may walk into dangerous situations without knowing it. That can be the difference between an officer going home at the end of a shift-or not. This risk is real, and it is unacceptable.

A knowledgeable, experienced District Clerk maintains records with care, precision, and accountability, helping protect the men and women who protect you and me.

I am running for District Clerk because I believe the office should work for the public.

Your dedication, long hours and sacrifices do not go unnoticed or unappreciated! As icy conditions move in, please check on your neighbors, help where you can, and be aware of the warming centers opened by our selfless servants for those in need. You all are seen, valued, and deeply appreciated!!

While the snow falls heavy and the cold cuts deep, most of us are able to stay indoors, safe and warm.
But for many others, winter storms are not something to watch through a window — they are something to walk straight into.

To our police officers, firefighters, EMS, nurses, and National Guard — thank you.
Thank you for standing calm in the middle of chaos, for responding when fear is high, and for putting others first when conditions are at their worst.

To emergency management teams, linemen, and plow operators — thank you.
Thank you for long shifts, frozen hands, sleepless nights, and work that often happens quietly, without recognition. Because of you, roads reopen, power returns, and communities keep moving forward.

Winter storms do not wait.
Emergencies do not pause. And yet, you show up anyway — knowing the risks, accepting the responsibility, and carrying the weight of countless lives depending on your actions.

Behind every flashing light, cleared street, restored power line, and rescued soul is sacrifice.
Time away from family. Physical exhaustion. Emotional strength. And a commitment to serve, no matter how harsh the conditions become.

These storms remind us of something important.
Heroes don’t always wear capes — sometimes they wear uniforms, heavy boots, helmets, and reflective gear, covered in snow but full of purpose.

So today, we say thank you.
Thank you for your courage, your resilience, and your unwavering dedication. You keep us safe when the world feels cold and uncertain.

May you stay protected, may your strength be renewed, and may you always know how deeply appreciated you truly are. ❄️🤍

Growing up, my parents and grandparents instilled in me the importance of faith, hard work, and an education from a very young age. Their values shaped who I am and laid the foundation for a life centered on service and integrity. Compassion and empathy led me to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice, with the goal of one day becoming a lawyer. During my final semester of college, after making the decision to put my degree on hold, (to grow my family) I had fewer than 30 credit hours remaining to complete my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology.

Service has always been at the heart of my life, whether through my work, volunteering, or standing up for others. Working in the courts has taught me that behind every case number is a real person. Families, victims, and individuals all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Being a court clerk is far more than an 8-to-5 job. When court runs past 5:00, we stay until proceedings are finished… and even then, there is often another hour of work before the day ends. The District clerk position demands commitment, dedication, and a deep understanding of the work not only in the courtroom but behind the scenes as well.

I do the work. I understand the process, the pressure, and the importance of getting it right. I am someone who listens first, acts thoughtfully, and never forgets who I work for. That perspective has shaped my approach to service, and I strive every day to make people feel heard, respected, and valued. I have learned that leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about showing up, telling the truth, and doing what’s right… even when it’s difficult. That is how I serve, and that is how I will continue to serve… if elected.
