The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches family honors the life and service of Youth Ranch alumnus and United States Marine Lance Corporal Nathaniel “Nate” Joseph Schultz, who was killed in Afghanistan at just 19 years old.
Nate was part of our Safety Harbor campus family for nearly two years, where he was an honor student and a natural leader. He graduated from our program alongside Countryside High School in 2009, and soon after fulfilled his dream of joining the United States Marine Corps. Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune.
During his time at the Ranches, Nate earned the Leadership Award and was recognized for his determination and character. In The Rancher magazine, he once shared, “Everybody here helps you…They know who you are and see what you can become.” That spirit defined who he was—a young man committed to growth, service, and something greater than himself.
For more than five decades, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has seen hundreds of its graduates answer the call to serve our country. Today, many continue to represent us across all branches of the military. Nate’s legacy is a powerful reminder of the impact of that calling.
We will never forget his service, his sacrifice, and the life he lived with purpose. ❤️
