Interesting…. 🤔

You have heard it a hundred times. Georgia banned Ray Charles for life. It is a great story and it is not what the record says. 🎹

Here is what did happen. In 1961 he was booked at the Bell Auditorium in Augusta. Black students at Paine College got word to him that the dance floor would be whites only, with Black folks put up in the balcony, at a show Black folks were paying to see. He turned around and did not play it. He got sued for breaking the contract and he took that on the chin.

The lifetime ban comes from the movie. When the Augusta Chronicle went back through the actual record, they could not find one. 🎬 Which honestly makes it worse and not better, because it means the state never needed to ban him. Georgia just let a man get run off a stage in one of its own cities and said nothing at all about it.

Then in March of 1979 that same state brought him to the Capitol in Atlanta to play Georgia on My Mind for the legislature, and a month later they voted his 1960 recording in as the official state song, 130 to 10 in the House and 45 to 4 in the Senate. Eighteen years from the balcony to the state song. Which version of this story did you grow up hearing?

Colin Kaepernick has been named the Muhammad Ali Center’s 2026 Humanitarian of the Year, nearly 10 years after his decision to kneel during the national anthem turned him into one of the most controversial athlete activists in America.

The Muhammad Ali Center said Kaepernick was selected for his stand against racial injustice and his continued work empowering underserved communities. The organization specifically highlighted his Know Your Rights Camp, which works with Black and Brown youth through education and community programs.

The comparison to Ali is significant. Both men faced intense public criticism and professional consequences after using their platforms to take political and social stands. Lonnie Ali said Kaepernick demonstrated the courage, sacrifice and commitment to service that embody Muhammad Ali’s legacy.

Kaepernick will formally receive the award at the 13th annual Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards in Louisville on November 7.

Everybody in Georgia knows the University of Georgia. Far fewer people know it stayed all white until two teenagers walked through that famous arch and refused to leave. 📚

In January 1961, Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter became the first Black students admitted to UGA. A court order got them in, a mob threw bricks and bottles at Charlayne's dorm window that first week, and the university even tried to suspend them "for their own safety." They came back anyway. Holmes graduated Phi Beta Kappa and became a doctor. Hunter became an award winning journalist the whole country would come to know. 🎓

They were basically kids, walking into a place that did everything short of breaking the law to keep them out, and they still finished. Did you know UGA wasn't integrated until 1961?

Oklahoma City’s Thompson sisters brought books, computers, and STEM activities directly to children who did not always have easy access to a library. Through Seas the Day Mobile Library, they transformed a retired school bus into a learning space on wheels, giving families a place where kids could read, discover new ideas, and feel inspired about learning. Their mobile library reached schools, daycares, and apartment communities, creating new opportunities for children to connect with education. A nearby book, a computer to use, or a hands-on science activity helped make learning feel more accessible and exciting. Their efforts showed how a simple idea, combined with care and dedication, could create a lasting impact in their community.
