Living clean
Page 169

"As we recover, we gain a new outlook on being clean...Life can become a new adventure for us."
Basic Text, p. 91

The using life is not a clean one--no one knows this better than we do. Some of us lived in physical squalor, caring neither for our surroundings nor ourselves. Worse, though, than any external filth was the way most of us felt inside. The things we did to get our drugs, the way we treated other people, and the way we treated ourselves had us feeling dirty. Many of us recall waking too many mornings just wishing that, for once, we could feel clean about our ourselves and our lives.

Today, we have a chance to feel clean by living clean. For us addicts, living clean starts with not using--after all, that's our primary use for the word "clean" in Narcotics Anonymous. But as we stay "clean" and work the Twelve Steps, we discover another kind of clean. It's the clean that comes from admitting the truth about our addiction rather than hiding or denying our disease. It's the freshness that comes from owning up to our wrongs and making amends for them. It's the vitality that comes from the new set of values we develop as we seek a Higher Power's will for us. When we practice the principles of our program in all our affairs, we have no reason to feel dirty about our lives or our lifestyles--we're living clean, and grateful to be doing so at last.

"Clean living" used to be just for the "squares." Today, living clean is the only way we'd have it.

Just for Today: I feel clean because I'm living clean--that's the way I want to keep it.

The Next Right Thing

“I was told that you can’t think yourself into the right actions, you have to act your way into the right thinking…”
- My Best Thinking Got Me Here, Life with Hope, second edition, page 176

The phrase “fake it until you make it” sums up so much of my experience in recovery. Just because I got clean and sober doesn’t mean that my disordered attitude, thoughts, or behavior have automatically been transformed. There are many days when I don’t want to pray, I don’t want to go to a meeting, and I don’t want to check in with my sponsor or another fellow. There are moments when I find myself consumed by much of the same negative self-talk that drove me to escape with ma*****na {your DOC here} for so many years; however, my thoughts don’t have to dictate my actions.

I have learned in recovery to pause, breathe, and do the next right thing. I try to act “as if’’ I am already the person I would like to be and trust that where my body goes, my mind will follow. I may not ever rid myself of my “stinking thinking,” but I sure don’t have to listen to it. Because of the fellowship, I can recognize my overwhelming feelings, accept them for what they are, and make more effective decisions for navigating them.

Final thought:
Today, I will act “as if” I’m already the person I would like to be by doing the next right thing. When I am not sure what to do, I will lean on the fellowship.

“I needed to stop spending so much time in the low-self-esteem room!”—To the Newcomer. CMA(crystal m**h anonymous)

There are so many problems we face when we get sober. We’re dealing with the wreckage of our past: trying to mend our relationships and finances, dealing with health and legal issues, and recovering from an insane lifestyle. It can all seem too much, like it’s beyond fixing.

We often hear in the rooms, “First things first.” Yes—our sobriety from crystal m**h and all other mind-altering substances must come first. We can get a job and make a lot of money, but if we’re not working our program, how long can we hold on to any of it? We can get into exciting new relationships, but if we make them more important than our recovery, our experience shows that we’ll most likely lose them—and everything else.

Our rooms are full of stories of addicts whose lives became better and fuller because they worked the Steps and got involved with the fellowship. Day by day, sobriety didn’t seem as important as all the exciting new things they were doing. The results were usually the same: relapse and a return to old behavior. We can learn from their experience and decide to keep recovery our No. 1 priority.

Affirmation: I’ve worked too hard to let anything come before my recovery. Today I will put sobriety first.
