It was an honor to spend time yesterday with Fort Drum active-duty soldiers, their families, and retirees to talk about healthcare.

Fort Drum is home to the 10th Mountain Division, yet it's the only Army division-size installation without a hospital on post or nearby. No inpatient beds, no labor and delivery, no emergency department. Roughly 35,000 service members and their families depend on our North Country's civilian hospitals to fill that gap.

That makes the health of our rural hospitals a matter of military readiness.

It's the same fight we're all in to keep quality healthcare here in the North Country, and I won't stop until every family, military and civilian, has the healthcare access they deserve.

Not loyalty to party bosses, not politics as usual, not social media rants — just someone focused on the issues that actually matter to you.

Gas prices across New York are averaging $4.38 a gallon today and the North Country is paying some of the highest prices in the entire state.

But the real gut punch is coming this winter. Home heating oil is already running well above last year's prices across the North Country, Capital District, and Central New York. For a typical household, that could mean over a thousand dollars in extra costs just to stay warm.

This is a rural cost of living crisis, and it's going to hit working families just above the income cutoff for HEAP and LIHEAP the hardest. We need an immediate boost in LIHEAP funding, and a real plan to get it to families before winter hits.

Twenty-five years ago today, we lost nearly 3,000 Americans on a morning none of us will ever forget. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger, the servicemembers who answered the call in the years since, and every family still carrying that loss, including those who've lost loved ones since to 9/11-related illness.

Today, and every September 11th, we remember.

Our seniors built this community — they deserve to retire with dignity and have access to the healthcare they need. Thank you to the agencies and vendors who show up every day to take care of our seniors and connect them with vital resources.
