Reptiles frequently suffer from human fear and fascination, preventing a true understanding of their diverse biology and ecological importance. These scaly, ectothermic vertebrates either lay eggs on land or give birth to live young after eggs hatch internally. While New Jersey was once home to ancient crocodilians and dinosaurs, it currently hosts over 40 native reptile species, including snakes, turtles, and lizards.
In Monmouth County alone, residents can observe up to 18 snake, 10 turtle, and three lizard species. Every single one of these animals fills a vital ecological role, such as snakes acting as critical managers of rodent populations. In honor of National Reptile Awareness Day, we must remember that our actions directly impact the survival of these elusive creatures.

ᴏᴄᴛᴏʙᴇʀ ɪs ʀᴀᴘᴛᴏʀ ᴍᴏɴᴛʜ!
Also called "birds of prey," raptors include owls, eagles, falcons, vultures, and hawks, such as the red-tailed hawk pictured here, which was recently spotted at Huber Woods Park.
Raptors have keen eyesight, hooked bills, and powerful feet with razor-sharp talons to help them catch, hold, and tear apart their food. These carnivorous birds feast on rodents, fish, insects, and even other birds. Many raptors call New Jersey home year-round, including the red-tailed hawk, red-shouldered hawk, bald eagle, and peregrine falcon, while others migrate in winter, like the osprey and broad-winged hawk.
