Hoàn Kiếm Lake

Hoàn Kiếm Lake (Hồ Hoàn Kiếm), also known as Sword Lake (Hồ Gươm), is a peaceful freshwater oasis located in the absolute historical and cultural center of Hanoi, Vietnam. Measuring roughly 12 hectares, this iconic lake serves as a serene refuge from the city's chaotic scooter traffic and is deeply woven into Vietnamese folklore.

📜 The Legend of the Returned Sword
The lake's name literally translates to "Lake of the Returned Sword". According to a famous 15th-century legend, Emperor Lê Lợi was given a magical divine sword by a Golden Turtle God to defeat the invading Ming Dynasty forces. After achieving victory and peace, the emperor was boating on the lake when a giant golden turtle surfaced, snatched the sword back to return it to the heavens, and submerged once more.

Tran Quoc Pagoda (Chùa Trấn Quốc) is recognized as the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, boasting a rich history that spans more than 1,500 years. Situated on Kim Ngu (Golden Fish) Islet on the eastern shore of West Lake, it offers a serene, picturesque landscape that harmoniously pairs ancient architecture with tranquil waters.

Key Historical & Architectural Highlights
* Ancient Origins: Built in the 6th century (around 541–548 AD) during the reign of Emperor Ly Nam De, it was originally named Khai Quoc ("National Founding") and located along the Red River.
* The Relocation: Due to riverbank erosion, the entire structure was meticulously relocated to its current West Lake island home in 1615.
* The 11-Storey Stupa: The most striking feature on-site is the 15-meter hexagonal red tower (Bao Thap). Each floor features six arched doorways, each housing a white precious-stone statue of Amitabha Buddha.
* Sacred Bodhi Tree: In the courtyard stands a historic Bodhi tree grown from a sapling gifted by Indian President Rajendra Prasad in 1959. It was grafted directly from the sacred tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
* Artistic Relics: The sanctuary protects many highly valued statues, including a red-and-gold lacquered sculpture of the Reclining Buddha entering Nirvana, regarded as a masterpiece of Vietnamese art.
