EPA's Fix a Leak Week: Day 4

🚿 Showerhead Leaks
A showerhead dripping just 10 times per minute can waste more than 500 gallons a year.... enough water to run 60 dishwasher loads!

Many leaks can be fixed by tightening the connection between the showerhead and pipe stem and adding pipe (Teflon) tape. It’s inexpensive, easy to apply, and available at most hardware stores.

If your shower drips even when it’s turned off, it may be a valve issue best handled by a skilled handyperson or licensed plumber.

Watch EPA's WaterSense Showerhead Bath Hack #1 video to see how simple it is to add Teflon tape and replace a showerhead.

💡 Tip: While you’re at it, check (and replace if needed) the washer or O‑ring inside the showerhead.

EPA's Fix A Leak Week: Day 3

🚰 Faucet Leaks
Old or worn washers and gaskets are often the cause of dripping faucets and even a slow drip adds up fast. A leak of just one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year… that’s enough for 180+ showers!

The good news? Many faucet leaks are easy to fix yourself.

A worn flapper could be wasting thousands of gallons a year!
Check your flapper regularly and replace it at least every 5 years to keep your toilet from running or “ghost flushing.” It’s a simple, affordable fix and your water bill will thank you! 💧💲

Tip: Bring the old flapper (or a picture of it) to the hardware store to make sure you buy a new flapper that fits your toilet model. EPA'S Fix a Leak Week: Day 1

🔍 Checking for Leaks
The average home loses 9,300 gallons annually to leaks, and 1 in 10 homes wastes 50+ gallons a day. The usual culprits?

🚽 Worn toilet flappers
🚰 Dripping faucets
🔧 Leaky valves

These fixes are often simple and inexpensive and can cut your water bill by about 10%.

How to check for leaks:
💧Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.
💧Identify toilet leaks by placing a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak. (Be sure to flush immediately after the experiment to avoid staining the tank.)
💧Examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe to check for surface leaks.
💧Use the EPA's checklist to keep track of your search for leaks.

➗🥧 Happy Pi Day! 3/14 ➗🥧

We may not bake pies… but we do deal with a lot of circles.

🔘Water tanks are round.
🔘Pipes are round.
🔘Even the path water takes through the treatment process comes full circle.

And guess what helps make all that work? π (pi)!

Without π:
👉Water tanks wouldn’t hold the right amount
👉 Pipes wouldn’t flow quite right

So while you enjoy a slice of pie today, remember behind every drop of water is a little math keeping things flowing. 🚰
