Thanks to our presenter, Fayette County Clerk Susan Lamb, for sharing information about the May 19 primary election and, more generally, Kentucky's overall commitment to holding safe, secure elections.

Visit the new Fayette County Clerk website at fayettekyclerk.gov/elections/ for full information about voting. And as Susan told us, please consider signing up to be an election officer. You'll find details at fayettekyclerk.gov/elections/working-as-an-election-officer/.

Thanks too to U.S. Senator candidate Amy McGrath and District 2 county commissioner candidate and KWN member Alayne White for appearing at the meeting.

We also heard from retired city employee and librarian Barbara Sutherland, who provided an update about Black Yarn, which strives to research and share information about how legal and economic policies put in place many decades ago still affect the prosperity and wellbeing of our Black citizens. If you'd like to volunteer in their current project to document deed restrictions against selling property to African-Americans in Lexington, please go to blackyarn.com/.

And be sure to check out Chair Nancy Carpenter's recent email newsletter. It's chock-a-block with interesting and useful information.

Because the third Tuesday of the month - our usual meeting date - coincides with the primary election this year, we won't have a meeting in May. But we hope to see you all June 16, when our speaker will be Al Cross, retired U.K. journalism professor and the Courier-Journal's longest serving political writer.

Today is the 56th Earth Day, and communities all over the U.S. and the world are finding ways to celebrate and protect our environment.

The Nature Conservancy is offering "Earth Day for All," a free guide to connecting with nature. You can download the guide at www.nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/earth-day/.

The theme for this year's international Earth Day is "Our Power, Our Planet." You'll find tools for taking action to protect the environment at the official Earth Day site's Earth Hub (www.earthday.org/earth-hub/)

And it's not too late to volunteer locally. Visit "Celebrate Earth Day with the City of Lexington" (www.lexingtonky.gov/news/celebrate-earth-day-city-lexington-0) for details.

Make this an Earth Day for all generations.

Looking for a way to observe the 56th Earth Day ? The Urban County Government has planned related activities throughout April, but a number of them will take place on the official Earth Day, April 22.

Tomorrow's activities include volunteering at Beaumont Preserve and McConnell Springs. Later in the month, the city is hosting volunteer opportunities at several parks throughout the city as well as activities for children, families, and birders.

You'll find a complete list at www.lexingtonky.gov/news/celebrate-earth-day-city-lexington-0.

And if you're interested in creating a nature sensory board (and learning what that is, if you're like me), you can register at www.lexingtonky.gov/calendar/2026-04-22/earth-day-nature-sensory-boards. The city is also sponsoring a drop-in cyanotype nature print art activity at Raven Run as long as supplies last (see the examples pictured below). You can learn about this activity at www.lexingtonky.gov/calendar/2026-04-22/earth-day-cyanotype-nature-prints. Both these events take place tomorrow, April 22.

Please join us for our monthly meeting tomorrow evening, Tuesday, April 21, at 6:30 pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3564 Clays Mill Road. Fayette County Clerk Susan Lamb will share information about voting in the 2026 Primary on May 19 and in the General Election this fall. She'll also discuss how election officers can help ensure safe and secure elections in the face of threatened voter suppression and the SAVE Act.

The candidates joining us tomorrow are Amy McGrath, US Senate, and Alisha Chaffin, Kentucky House 88th District. Several LFUCG candidates may also join us; and if so, they will be introduced and you can talk with them before or after the meeting.

You'll find complete information about voting at Go Vote Kentucky (vrsws.sos.ky.gov/ovrweb/govoteky/). Information about voter registration and polling places is available at vrsws.sos.ky.gov/VIC/, and CivicLex has info on LFUCG races at news.civiclex.org/who-is-running-for-lfucg-offices-in-2026/. And you can sign up for a voter information guide to candidates at the Kentuckians for Commonwealth website (archive.kftc.org/election).

See you tomorrow evening at 6:30!

As Women's History Month draws to a close, you may want to pay a visit to the Smithsonian's website. In honor of our nation's 250th anniversary, they have compiled "We Do Declare: Women's Voices on Independence," an oral history project featuring more than 30 contemporary women reflecting on how women's financial independence has advanced over the last 50 years.

You can check out the collection at womenshistory.si.edu/we-do-declare.

The Smithsonian is also raising funds for building an American Women's History Museum in Washington. To donate to this project or to learn how to support its development, go to womenshistory.si.edu/other-ways-give.

The above media is provided by YouTube (Privacy Policy, Terms of Service) We Do Declare is our oral history project exploring what independence has meant in women’s lives since the 1970s. To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we conducted over 30 oral histories a...
