Great conversation as always at the Public Policy Luncheon. Thank you to panelists Senator Robert Stivers, Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe, Representative Josh Bray, and Representative David Meade. Kentucky’s and Lexington’s economies are strong 💪. We certainly agree that we’re a phenomenal place to live and thrive 🐎🌏.

We had a great time welcoming Minister Tang Zhiwen and his team from the Sub-National Affairs Section of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC. The luncheon brought together partners from local government and higher education, including Vice Mayor Wu, Commissioner Allen-Bryant, Asbury University President Dr. Kevin Brown, and leadership and representatives from the University of Kentucky, Bluegrass Community and Technical College, and Berea College.

Did you know? The Kentucky Association of Chinese Language Teachers (KACLT) has facilitated exchange trips for nearly 300 students and educators from Central Kentucky to China in recent years. BCTC also offers trips to China to some of their students. How cool is that?!

We were excited to join partners and volunteers to support our Parent and Guardian Empowerment program partners as they organized mock needs assessment interviews for their social work interns.

Bilingual and multilingual volunteers were integral, representing the fast-growing population of emerging multilingual speakers in our community.

Did you know that 1 in 5 students in our public schools are English learners? How cool is that!

We were honored to welcome Mayor Linda Gorton ( ) to Global Lex this past Friday, alongside Kay Sargent, the executive director of our Sister Cities Commission.

During her visit, Mayor Gorton toured our current gallery exhibit showcasing the beauty of Korean culture, curated in partnership with the Korean American Society of Kentucky (KASK) and featuring pieces from local community collections.

Did you know Mayor Gorton previously lived in South Korea? Lexington also maintains a friendship city relationship with Jeju, and we are proud to currently host an intern from Jeju at Global Lex.

We’re grateful for Mayor Gorton’s continued support of Global Lex and our mission to build connections across cultures and communities.

Friday Feature: Thank you Carla Gover for stopping by Global Lex and for all you do.

Carla is an 8th-generation Kentuckian, singer, songwriter, and clogger whose roots run deep in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Carla is one of the creative forces behind Cornbread & Tortillas, a bilingual folk opera weaving together stories from Appalachia, Latin America, and South America, and a tireless community organizer working to shift the narrative around Appalachia. She also cares deeply about helping to creative a more just and inclusive Kentucky.

Whether she’s teaching traditional dance, writing songs that carry culture forward, or building bridges between communities across Kentucky, Carla brings the same conviction: that the heart of this region is bigger and more beautiful when we connect across cultures and backgrounds.

What an ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE day at the Lexington Civics Day organized by Fayette County Public Schools and CivicLex .

Our next generation is incredible y’all. We loved engaging with wonderful students who presented on their civic projects. They included data collection and launching initiatives covering topics ranging from immigration, sustainability, public safety, health and wellness and so much more.

Special shoutouts to all the students who talked about the importance of language access, belonging environments, and the challenges facing our immigrant populations and the opportunities and systems needed to ensure their success. Bravo 👏👏👏

They also engaged in conversation with a panel from the Mayor’s Racial Justice Commission and experienced a simulation about the experiences of international students and English learners in our schools and examined their data.

Thank you all for your visit and for being incredible community leaders. We can’t wait to see your class projects come to fruition and to continue partnering with each and every single one of you!
