The prayers of my family go out to this family and to all who knew this young lady.
Dear Lehighton Area High School Community,
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of senior student Joleea McDermott.
This morning, I met with our students and staff to share this heartbreaking news and to remind them that support is available during this difficult time. Counseling and grief support services remained available throughout the school day for any student or staff member in need.
Joleea had become a valued part of our school community. Over the past several years, she grew through her involvement in clubs, friendships, and the arts. Many members of our community recently saw her work showcased in last week’s art show, and she had earned several scholarships, including a full scholarship offer to attend college this fall. Those who knew Joleea saw a young woman who was beginning to truly come out of her shell and look forward to her future.
At the request of the family, today’s Field Day activities continued as planned, as they shared that Joleea would want others to continue to laugh, connect, and enjoy being together. Throughout the day, students and staff supported one another with compassion and care while also taking time to honor Joleea’s memory.
Our thoughts remain with Joleea’s family, friends, classmates, and all who are grieving this tremendous loss. We encourage families to continue talking openly with their children and to reach out to the school if additional support is needed.
As additional information becomes available and appropriate to share, we will continue to keep our school community informed.
Sincerely,
Lehighton Area High School Administration
