Adelphi Mill & Storehouse
📍 8401 & 8402 Riggs Road, Adelphi
🏛️ Built: 1796
Nestled along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, the two story stone Adelphi Mill is the oldest and largest remaining grist mill in the region. Across Riggs Road sits the smaller stone storehouse.
Both structures were created by brothers Issachar and Mahlon Scholfield, who fittingly renamed their land “Adelphi,” Greek for “brothers.”
Over the years, the mill changed hands, including a notable ownership by George Washington Riggs, founder of the Riggs banking house, the McCormick Goodhart family, and now its owned by M-NCPPC.

Did you know:
• 94% of residential land in Prince George’s County is zoned for single-family homes
• 72% of renters and 38% of homeowners are cost-burdened
• The County is thousands of units short of its housing goals

To better meet residents’ needs, we are exploring Missing Middle Housing options (variety of housing types including duplexes, fourplexes, townhomes, courtyard buildings) that fit into existing designs, support walkable communities, and provide pathways to homeownership.

📣 What’s next? We are briefing the Planning Board on June 4 and the County Council on June 29.
