Michigan is making it easier for apprentices to turn their hard-earned skills into college credit.

Watch highlights from the inaugural signing ceremony for the Michigan College Credit for Apprenticeships Program, where we were joined by partners to celebrate our new statewide effort to recognize registered apprenticeship training for academic credit—creating more opportunities for workers, supporting employers and strengthening Michigan's workforce.

Special thanks to our partners for helping turn this vision into reality and expanding opportunities for workers across Michigan.

As Youth Employment Month continues, we want to help answer one of the most common questions from young workers and employers: "Do I need a work permit?"

The minimum age for youth employment is 14 years old. In Michigan, most minors must obtain a work permit before beginning employment.

The Youth Employment website includes:

Work permit forms for youth under 16 and ages 16-17.
Frequently asked questions.
Information for employers.
Guidance on youth employment requirements.
Help ensure young workers start employment on the right foot by sharing these resources with students and families in your network.

We joined the Michigan Workforce Development Board, Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP), Michigan Community College Association, Schoolcraft College, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers and other partners to celebrate the first signing ceremony of Michigan's new College Credit for Apprenticeships Program.

Led by LEO, this first-of-its-kind statewide initiative recognizes the rigorous training completed through registered apprenticeships by awarding college credit, helping workers earn degrees and credentials faster while creating stronger pathways between education and careers.

"Registered Apprenticeships are a powerful way for Michigan workers to earn while they learn, gaining real-world skills and credentials while bringing home a paycheck," said LEO Director Susan Corbin. "The Michigan College Credit for Apprenticeships Program enables past, current and future apprentices to earn college credit for their on-the-job training, opening doors to degrees and certifications that strengthen careers, support employers and build a skilled, adaptable workforce across Michigan."
