It’s the two-year anniversary of one of the darkest days in our democracy’s history. I stood on the Capitol steps with the families of those who lost their lives.

The school year begins in less than a month for DPSCD schools, and even though mask mandates and capacity limits have been lifted in the wake of the COVID-19 vaccine, it is still just as important as ever to stay safe. A new strand of COVID-19 called the Delta Variant is surging across the U.S., it is more contagious and accounts for the vast majority of new cases. Many schoolchildren are too young to receive the vaccine, so be sure to take precautions and stay safe this school year!

As parents have been preparing for camp, vacations and the school year ahead, families are concerned about how safe their summer or fall plans may be for their kids.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers unanimously certified a petition from Unlock Michigan that would repeal the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945, which Gov. Gretchen Whitmer used to declare and extend a state of emergency during the pandemic. The Senate subsequently voted in favor of the measure.
This petition did pass.

Why Democrats and I voted no:
We could be doing what the people of Michigan sent us to Lansing to do and focusing on things like passing a final budget, vaccine distribution and providing flood relief, but instead Republicans have chosen to continue to play political games.
Unlock Michigan is a partisan political power grab aimed at undermining and hampering Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s efforts to save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. This measure will cripple the ability of governors from both parties to act quickly and decisively during public health emergencies. The Legislature can amend sections of the law ruled unconstitutional without erasing the entire law and leaving our leaders with their hands tied in times of crisis.
Fueled by millions of dollars in dark money, Unlock Michigan has made a mockery of the petition gathering effort and a mockery of our election process with their illegal and unscrupulous tactics. A felon convicted of voter fraud managed the petition drive. Field coordinators coached signature gatherers to lie about the contents of the proposal. Signature gatherers left unattended petition sheets with store clerks to illegally collect signatures from customers. Field coordinators clearly instructed signature gatherers to lie under oath if deposed. This conduct is from many of the same people crying wolf about election fraud. As it turns out, they were the ones committing fraud.
