A special remembrance ceremony was held at the African American Veteran’s Memorial Garden In Jackson.

We heard from several veterans and family members talk about their service and what Memorial Day means to them.

We also heard from others honoring their loved ones who served and are no longer with us.

Portraits and photos of African American military service members are shown throughout the garden and wreaths were placed to honor those we lost.

Diane Washington, founder of Young People of Purpose-YPOP, hosts the event every year along with Sauk Trail Post #246 at the Garden on Rockwell Street.

Thank you to Diane for such a moving and important ceremony to honor our African American Military service members who gave so much to our country.

Remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their life for our freedom.

Residents lined the streets in Jackson, Chelsea and all across Michigan and the nation to pay their respects to military service members who died serving their country.

The Jackson County Veterans Council hosts the parade with a ceremony at the Mount Evergreen Cemetery.

The American Legion Post #31 organizes the Chelsea parade with a ceremony at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Wreaths were laid to honor those we lost as the playing of taps brings reflection on the dedication of our armed forces.

They fought for the freedom we enjoy today.
Originally known as “Decoration Day,” graves were decorated to honor military service members who died while serving.

We celebrate the 250th anniversary this year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Thank you to all those who gave their lives
so the United States of America could celebrate 250 years.

We thank you and will never forget what you did for us.

You know it’s close to summer when the classic cars show up in downtown Jackson and Cascade Falls is turned on!

The first cruise-in had hundreds of people downtown, checking out the vintage cars and stopping in our retail shops and restaurants.

The weekend fun continued at the Cascades.

The Falls were lit up as everyone gathered for the Memorial Day fireworks.

There’s always something to do in Jackson and we’re fortunate to have beautiful parks to visit all year!

Congratulations to my friend Dr. Dan Phelan for 25 years leading Jackson College.

It was April 2001 when Dr. Phelan became President and CEO of Jackson College.

The college has grown in so many ways offering students unique instruction and career advancement opportunities.

Jackson College strengthens our students and community.

Thank you President Phelan for 25 years of dedication, vision, leadership and commitment to your students.

It’s always nice to see our military members at the state capitol.

We had a great group of service members from Jackson for the event.

It was the Change of Command Ceremony for the Army Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion.

I was honored to meet several constituents on the Color Guard Detail.

Lt. Col. Quentin McCart takes command of the Great Lakes Recruiting Battalion.

He’s walking 500 miles to help our veterans.

Trek for Vets founder and former Marine, Lawrence Miller is walking to raise money and bring awareness to issues facing our veterans.

Last year he walked 200 miles across Michigan.
This year he’s walking 500 miles in 25 days
selling Trek for Vets coffee along the way to
raise money for non profits helping veterans.

Lawrence began his journey in St. Ignace, making stops along the way including the State Capitol where we caught up with him.

Then it was onto Chelsea where he talked with the community.

Chelsea Mayor Kate Henson welcomed him with a proclamation.

I had the honor of presenting Lawrence with a special State Tribute in Chelsea, recognizing his efforts to help veterans.

Lawrence wants to bring veterans out of isolation into the community helping to bridge connections.

The Trek for Vets ends in Royal Oak for the Memorial Day parade.

Thank you Lawrence for putting issues facing our veterans in the spotlight offering hope to all our military service members.

As Chair of the State House Families and Veterans Committee I look forward to having you testify as we work on policy to make sure all our veterans receive the help they need.

Families of crime victims wanted to let law enforcement know how much they appreciated their dedication and help during a very difficult time.

It was an evening of reflection and thanks for our police officers and also a time to remember those we lost in the line of duty.

A candlelight vigil was held at Lumen Christi High School in Jackson.

Families wanted to express their thanks to law enforcement and the crime victims unit who assisted them as they worked through the investigative and court process.

This is an important event because it lets our law enforcement hear how much the community appreciates them for all they do.

Thank you for being there when we need you.

Life skills, education, employment assistance, community resources, peer support and transitional housing are all part of Serenity Sober Living House in Jackson.

It’s about helping women in recovery from substance use disorder.

I met with founder and certified recovery coach Nicole Gaither who is herself a survivor of addiction and wanted to help others recover.

The group had a fundraiser going on, offering to go salads to help raise donations.

There are rooms available, advocacy and coaching to help women as they move away from addiction, rebuild their lives and get to a healing place.

Thank you for the opportunity to see Serenity Sober Living House as you reach out to help recovery happen.

45 years of making sure our neighbors are taken care of with whatever they need.

That is Faith In Action.

Faith In Action is celebrating its 45th Anniversary.

A special celebration was held at The Collin’s Off Main with music and a strolling dinner.

I had the honor of securing a special State Tribute for the agency.

Lucas Gravatt from my legislative staff presented the tribute to Executive Director Sarah Shugart and other staff members.

Faith In Action located in Chelsea and Dexter, is a non profit which helps those in need.

The agency offers emergency help like food, paying utility bills, school supplies, housing, clothing, counseling, medical equipment, and other household items.

Congratulations on 45 years of helping others and thank you for being in our community!
