Rep. Wozniak supports House investigation into blocked citizen voting initiative
State Rep. Doug Wozniak this week supported the creation of a new House select committee that will examine the review process for the Americans for Citizen Voting petition after more than 700,000 signatures were submitted but the proposal did not advance to the November ballot.
The proposed constitutional amendment would require individuals voting in Michigan elections to prove they are U.S. citizens.
“When more than 700,000 Michiganders sign a petition asking for an issue to be put before voters, we owe it to them to make sure the process was fair and accurate,” said Wozniak (R-Shelby Township). “There are legitimate questions about what happened here, and Michigan residents deserve answers.”
The Michigan Board of State Canvassers spent nearly seven hours Monday reviewing the petition before deadlocking on whether the campaign had collected enough valid signatures to meet the required threshold of 446,198.
The determination centered on a sample of 1,000 petition signatures reviewed by election officials. According to the Bureau of Elections, the petition fell just short of the number of valid signatures needed within that sample to qualify for certification.
Wozniak said he supports the select committee’s efforts to examine how signatures were selected and reviewed and whether changes are needed to make the process more transparent and understandable.
“People put a tremendous amount of time and effort into Michigan’s citizen petition process because they believe their voices can make a difference,” Wozniak said. “When questions arise about how that process is carried out, we have a responsibility to get the facts and make sure people can have confidence in the system.”
