Looking Ahead for the Fremont-Winema National Forest

Camping season is just around the corner and here are a couple of things to know before kicking off your summer in South-Central Oregon!

Midsummer, we will start a culvert replacement project on Forest Road 34 just past the Mitchell Monument Documentary Site. Work on the project will begin August 1, 2026. The road will be closed during the replacement.

Undersized culverts are being replaced by aquatic organism passage structures to support recovery efforts for the federally listed bull trout.

While some campgrounds may have water available, it may not be potable. Do not assume all taps are safe immediately when water is turned on; water requires testing and may need treatment before it is safe for drinking.

We have great news! Campers will have the option to use Scan and Pay alternative option through recreation.gov at select sites. Cash payment options will continue to be available on site if you prefer to use cash.

Follow the directions below to download the app.

With limited or no cell service across the Forest, visitors will need to download the Recreation.gov app and add a valid payment method BEFORE heading out on their adventure. After arriving at a recreation site or open campsite, locate the nearest information board and scan the provided QR code using the same mobile device that has the Recreation.gov app. After paying, visitors should write down and display their confirmation code on their car dashboard or campsite post. At recreation sites with no cell service, the payment will be noted as โ€˜pendingโ€™ with the payment going through once service is restored.

Be prepared, download the Recreation.gov app today: https://www.recreation.gov/mobile-app

Prescribed Fire Update

Looking ahead and pending all required approvals, starting this Thursday the Fremont-Winema National Forest will be conducting a prescribed fire near Chiloquin Oregon and Silver Lake which will continue into the weekend.

Hazardous fuels and wildfire risk reduction remain a top priority. Our first line of defense is reducing hazardous fuels before fires start. Prescribed fire is one of the most effective tools we have to reduce hazardous fuels.

By proactively reducing fuels, local communities are better prepared for the potential risk of wildfires

What to expect?

The City of Chiloquin and the community of Silver Lake may see and smell smoke during the operational periods with lingering smoke lasting 8 to 10 days

Travelers along Highway 97 may see smoke and flames.

Smoke impacts are expected to be minimal, and no traffic delays are planned.

Travels are encouraged to stay alert and drive safely! Please be prepared for fire traffic and slow-moving vehicles.
