Lake Crystal Public Utilities electric department changed out its substation transformer last week to continue to provide reliable electric service to the community of Lake Crystal. This project took seven days to complete once the transformer was taken out of service. The Lake Crystal Public Utilities electric crew worked around the clock for fourteen consecutive days to prepare for and change this transformer out in order to resume normal operations as soon as possible. With no other way to supply electricity to our community for the duration of those seven days while the electric utility changed this transformer out, the electric utility turned to BENCO Electric Cooperative.

A HUGE thank you to BENCO Electric Cooperative for powering the community of Lake Crystal during this project's timeframe. This couldn't have been done without their help, our electrical engineering firm, and the long list of distributors, and electrical material manufacturers to make this project happen within a such a minuscule timeframe.

A reminder related to power outages: Our electric utility has at least one electric department employee on call within a half hour response time to our facility 24-7 / 365. Please respect the workspace these employees need to keep the public safe around their work zones. The electric department's employees will work as efficient and safe as possible to restore electric service and return home to their families safely.

If you are experiencing a power outage, or have any safety related electrical emergencies associated with the electric utility, please contact Lake Crystal City Hall during normal business hours at 507-726-2538, or 507-726-2260 outside of normal business hours. To find this information, please visit the City of Lake Crystal's website. Click on the "Public Utilities" link, then "Electric Department".

A reminder that tornado sirens will sound across the state of Minnesota at 1:45pm and again at 6:45pm today. This statewide tornado drill is part of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota.

Use this time to prepare and practice your severe weather safety plan.

The best thing you can do to keep yourself and your family safe from severe weather is to be weather aware and have a plan. Know exactly where to go and what to do when severe weather strikes. If you do that, chances are you are going to be just fine.

In Iowa, Severe Weather Awareness Week took place a few weeks ago.

It doesn’t matter where you are, the message is simple: be weather aware and have a plan.
