Today’s live structure fire training burn at the donated structure on 3rd Street and Madison Street in Lafayette was completed successfully. Our firefighters were able to gain valuable hands on training experience in a controlled environment, helping sharpen the skills needed to protect our community when real emergencies happen.

Crews will continue to monitor the scene periodically throughout the day. Residents may notice smoke visible at times over the next several days as materials continue to cool and smolder.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers, Amity Fire District, Carlton Fire District, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Emergency Services, Yamhill Fire Distirct and the property owners who made this important training opportunity possible.

LIVE FIRE TRAINING TODAY!

On Sunday, May 17, 2026, Lafayette Fire Department will be conducting a live fire training exercise at a donated structure located at 3rd & Madison Street. Firefighters will spend the morning completing realistic interior fire attack evolutions and training scenarios before allowing the structure to fully burn under controlled conditions for the remainder of the day.

This type of hands on training is invaluable for our firefighters and mutual aid partners, providing one of the most realistic training opportunities possible outside of an actual structure fire. These evolutions allow crews to strengthen coordination, improve fireground decision making, and safely practice critical firefighting skills in a controlled environment.

ROAD & SIDEWALK CLOSURES
• Madison Street will be closed from 3rd Street to 4th Street, 4th Street will be closed from Market Street to Monroe Street.
• The north sidewalk on 3rd Street will be closed from Market Street to Monroe Street

Due to the location of this training, we kindly ask the public to avoid the immediate area to help prevent traffic congestion and allow emergency personnel to operate safely.

PUBLIC VIEWING AREA

Community members wishing to observe the training must remain on the south sidewalk of 3rd Street. Pedestrian access will remain available at:
• 3rd Street & Market Street
• 3rd Street & Monroe Street
Please use marked crosswalks only

Residents in the surrounding area are encouraged to keep windows closed during the training to avoid inconvenience from smoke odors.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the property owner for donating the structure and taking the necessary steps to prepare and test the home for a safe and successful training opportunity. Community support like this plays a vital role in helping us prepare firefighters to serve Lafayette safely and effectively.

🔥 Wildland Fire Awareness Month 🔥

For homes within our city, routine roof and gutter maintenance is one of the simplest ways to help reduce wildfire risk.

Dry leaves, pine needles, and debris that collect on rooftops and in gutters can easily ignite when wind driven embers land nearby. Keeping these areas clean removes one of the most common places a wildfire can take hold during fire season.

A clean roof does more than improve curb appeal, it helps strengthen your home’s defense against wildfire. Lafayette Fire Department will continue sharing practical steps residents can take to build a safer, more fire-resilient community.

Firefighters from LFD joined crews from across Yamhill County this weekend for an invaluable live fire training burn in Sheridan, Oregon.

Training burns provide one of the most realistic hands on experiences possible outside of an actual structure fire. These evolutions allow our firefighters to sharpen critical skills, observe fire behavior in real time, and build confidence operating inside dynamic fire conditions within a controlled environment.

Our firefighters Jack Vandehey, Talen Bailey, Madi Beier, and Patty Riggs spent Saturday completing interior fire attack evolutions, and assisting with the structure's final free burn.

A huge thank you to the Sheridan Fire District for including our crews in this training opportunity.
