Last night I had the honor of attending and speaking at the Hats on for Healing event. This amazing event raises money for Kosair's Face It Movement to end child abuse! It is truly meaningful to know that I inspired this event. When Julie Anson and her friends were walking around The Maples park, they were trying to think of ways to help in the community, and then they came across the story about Kami's Law Kentucky in The Oldham Era. Seeing that at 12 years old I was trying to make a difference inspired them to create this truly extraordinary event and have the proceeds go to ending child abuse. One of my biggest wishes is that I continue to inspire people and that everyone will join in the fight and become Champions for Children!!

Last Thursday I had a very productive day in Frankfort. I took meetings, on my own, with Scott Sharp, House of Representatives, State Representative Patrick Flannery, Stephanie Ann Dietz, Derek Lewis KY State Representative, Blanton, and Meade. These are all members of the House Judiciary Committee and I was able to get every one of their support!!! I even gained 2 co-sponsors.
I know time is short but I am NOT GIVING UP!!
Kyan's Law
HB253

There is still time for Kyans Law. I need your help. Please call the LRC line everyday and ask House Leadership to assign to Judiciary. It only takes 5 days for a bill to go thru the entire process. Lets get this done, the kids of the Commonwealth deserve to be safe!!!
My bill will help the most vulnerable according to the latest Child Maltreatment report for our state, the children under the age of 4.
This bill can and will (if passed) help prevent child abuse from continuing. It will get kids and families help before it is too late. It was too late for Kyan, lets use his memory to make sure other vulnerable children dont suffer the same fate!!!!

By Kiera Dunk Kiera Dunk received a Champion for Children award at the 2024 Rally for Kentucky Kids during Children's Advocacy Day at the Capitol Child abuse, it's not something a lot of people think about. It's not a fun flashy headline that makes the news,

The latest Child Maltreatment report shows Kentucky is heading in the right direction. We are still 60% higher than the national average so we must continue to do better. The reports shows that children 4 and under are still the most at risk and have the most cases of abuse and neglect. These kids aren't in school for teacher or guidance counselor to notice. They may not even be in public a lot. However, if they have a family pet being abused or left outside animal control could be involved. If Kyan's Law is passed and our animal control officers have just a little more training than they can help these kids. Calling the cabinet is sooner and getting the child help before its too late, like it was for Kyan. We need HB253!

I had a wonderful time last night at Goodwood in Frankfort for C. Ed Massey and was even given the honor of speaking.
Every legislator there was so kind to me and even though it was a social event after hours they listened to me when I wanted to talk about Kyan's Law and posed for pictures with me! It was just a really wonderful evening.
I know Kyan's Law (HB253) hasn't moved yet in the house, but I am confident we will get there! I will continue to fight for this bill for the kids of Kentucky!

I am so honored to be a part of this event as a guest speaker. Last year I was also honored to be a model at the event with my identical twin! This is such a great event for a great cause! Get your tickets now, they will sell out!

Typically, I use this page to promote my bill and others that focus on helping the children of Kentucky stay safe from abuse. Sometimes though I see a bill that would be so harmful to the kids of Kentucky that I must share and ask that you contact your reps to NOT SUPPORT SB208.
SB208 would really change how CPS handles cases and terminating rights. It removes and redefines neglect. Just because neglect is not physical abuse does not mean it isn't harmful. Kids can die from neglect! It also will make physical abuse meet an extremely high threshold which is near death or damage to organ. This is not right, a child should not be near death to have to be protected permanently from their abuser.
I am sure the Senator that filed this legislation was trying to protect parental rights, this is not the way to do that. Some parents do not deserve rights. Kids deserve rights to be safe and protected.
This legislation will set Kentucky backwards in helping children and trying to end child abuse.

I had a wonderful meeting with Elliott today regarding HB253 Kyan's Law. I am hopeful now that we will see movement in the House and getting it assigned to Judiciary Committee! Representative Elliott didn't rush me at all, even asking about my interests at school after we finished discussing the bill.
Even though Kyans Law has seemingly stalled out in the Kentucky Senate (for now), I am not giving up and will continue to push for this legislation to help keep Ky's kids safe. If you objectively look at all the data and peer reviewed independent studies out there, you will see the overwhelming correlation between animal abuse/neglect and child abuse/neglect. Every state that requires animal control officers to be mandated reporters has better child abuse/neglect rates than our state does! While Ky is slowly starting to climb down from being the worst state for child abuse in the nation, we still have a long way to go, and this bill is a step in the right direction!

Wish me luck today. I have a very important meeting in Frankfort today for Kyan'2s Law HB253! I need this meeting to go well, the kids of Ky need this meeting to go well.
On a side note, getting their extra early as I am currently on crutches. :-(
