💰 SALES TAX 101: COLLECT. FILE. REMIT.

If you operate a business that makes taxable sales, rentals, or provides taxable services within the City of Kodiak, understanding your sales tax responsibilities is an important part of running your business.

The seller collects sales tax on behalf of the City for sales and services transacted in the City as defined by Kodiak City Code 3.08.020. The seller is also responsible for determining if the sale is exempt from sales tax. If in doubt, contact the City of Kodiak Finance Department for a determination.

All sellers must collect the appropriate sales tax, file a sales tax return at the end of each quarter and remit the tax collected to the City of Kodiak by the applicable deadline. Sales tax returns must be filed even if there are zero sales to report.
📌 Collect: Charge sales tax on taxable transactions.
📌 File: Report your sales and tax collected on your sales tax return.
📌 Remit: Submit the tax collected to the City by the deadline.

Sales tax collected from customers isn’t additional business income - it is public funding.
