Rural Metro Fire - Knox County

Rural Metro Fire - Knox County Rural Metro Fire Department serves the citizens of Knox County, Tennessee, proudly providing fire protection, prevention, and emergency medical services.

Rural Metro Fire was founded by Lou Weitzman, a newspaper reporter, after he witnessed a house fire near his home just outside the city limits of Phoenix, Arizona in 1948. There was no fire department established for the area so Weitzman, feeling something had to be done, went and purchased a fire engine and proceeded to go door to door asking residents to subscribe to the new fire service by payi

ng an annual membership fee (in lieu of taxes). This was the origin of the Rural Fire Department, later renamed Rural/Metro Fire Department. Rural Metro Fire provides fire protection services primarily under a subscription-based model to individual homeowners and commercial property owners in unincorporated suburbs, throughout several counties in Arizona, Oregon and Tennessee. These areas are not included within municipal fire department boundaries or paid for by property taxes, and Rural Metro Fire fills that unique niche. It is the business model that Rural Metro Fire was founded upon. Additionally, in certain communities, Rural Metro Fire partners directly with cities, towns and fire districts under master fire contracts to provide a full complement of fire protection, prevention and emergency medical services.

Today, our Haz Mat team completed annual training as part of our ongoing commitment to safety, preparedness, and operational excellence.
HazMat responses require specialized knowledge, skills, and certification above the firefighter training, to effectively identify, assess and mitigate a hazardous materials incident. Maintaining a certified team is not only essential for compliance - it ensures we are ready to respond when called upon. We are proud of the dedication our team members demonstrate in maintaining their certifications, sharpening their skills, and keeping up the highest response standards of readiness to protect our community.

We always encourage drivers to take extra care when driving in rain conditions where there could be standing water. Today, our crew in Farragut responded to a single vehicle car crash that was clearly impacted by the rain and slick conditions. Luckily, no one was injured but we were on the scene for a while helping the wrecker to get the car back onto the roadway.
Please be careful this weekend as these pop up storms continue. Stay alert!
