Tonight, the Knox County Commission UNANIMOUSLY approved the emergency ordinance to rein in surveillance technology and end the county’s current Flock arrangement.

🚨 Flock has 30 DAYS to remove ALL cameras.

And this is so much bigger than Flock.

This ordinance creates a new article in the Knox County Code limiting surveillance technology in general.

Several commissioners raised the possibility that appropriately limited cameras might make sense around places such as schools or high-traffic areas.

And this ordinance puts guardrails which takes that into consideration, while also guaranteeing another mass-surveillance system can’t simply be slipped into a Sheriff’s Office contract without county oversight.

Tonight, Knox County listened.

Two Mondays in a row is a LOT, we know,
but those Flock cameras have GOT TO GO!!

This vote, if passed, would require all existing Flock automated cameras to be completely removed from Knox County within 30 days.

The public needs to be there. Our commissioners need to be looking us directly in the eyes when they place their vote.

It was a wild and almost unbelievable day surrounding the KCSO.

We learned that KCSO spent years buying Flock cameras in batches priced at exactly $24,990... $10 under the $25,000 threshold that requires mayoral review and a county commission sign-off.

There’s an additional 2.5 mil cost PER YEAR to maintain the system that was not budgeted and was a total surprise to the Commission.

Because the sheriff’s office intentionally bypassed county purchasing laws, the active agreements may be legally invalid. WVLT News confirms that "The Knox County Commission could vote to remove all Flock cameras in the county as soon as Aug. 31," noting that Commissioner Larsen Jay stated during the meeting he would be "tacking an amendment on an emergency ordinance expected to see a vote Aug. 31."

It also came to light that numerous individuals in the Knox County Sheriff's Office, including the entire legal team, resigned last Friday prior to today's information session. (?!?!?!)

When asked whether the data was an open or closed system, KCSO said that the data was part of a closed system. However, upon further questioning, it was revealed that other agencies had already been given access to the data, meaning it WASN'T closed at all.

While discussing the questionable (and stereotyped) choices of zip codes chosen for placement of the cameras, Commissioner Rawls was quoted as saying, “Flock off!”

AND a newly submitted medical affidavit from Sheriff Spangler's oncologist explicitly states that he only has weeks to live. 😬

To quote the silent generation … “In all my days!”
