Mama Bears Wildlife Rescue Mama Bears Wildlife Rescue gives injured and orphaned wildlife a place to get the care they need

09/13/2023

it has come to my attention that some good meaning folks will call a “pet store” and ask for advice on how to care for orphan wildlife babies they’ve found.

I’m so glad you’ve reached out to get the right information, however pet stores are bad for “marketing their products” vs giving out the right information.

if you hear something like “this will work.” that’s a red flag. Formulas are not “good enough” and if given the wrong formula it can cause a range of problems and in extreme cases, death.

We know rehabbers are notorious for hitting you with the “just bring it in!!” which truthfully is the best thing you can do, is turn it over to a licensed rehabber, however if you’re not going to do that regardless we WILL provide you with the right information for each species, as well as inform you on the legal risks of caring for this animal yourself.
At the end of the day, we just want the animal properly cared for, we don’t care by who! 😊

this garter snake came into Ponderosa today with twine wrapped so tightly around his little belly it was digging into his scales. He came in, got the care he needed and was sent on his way back home! A happy ending for us all today.

i have said this before but i want to say it again.
Cottontail rabbits (& birds) are the two most sensitive wildlife species. On top of that, nature didn’t offer them much of a defense mechanism.
When stressed, rabbits will release a toxin into their blood, causing septicemia and eventually death.

But how can you tell when a rabbit is stressed?
They do sometimes but rarely squeak.
Normally-
you can’t tell if a rabbit is stressed!
Rabbits will freeze, and seem perfectly calm, however in the wild they use this technique to avoid being seen by predators.
This IS their defense mechanism.
But remember the long term effects stress can have on a little bunny.
so the next time you find a tiny little cottontail rabbit, you will know what to look for in terms of signs of stress.
We encourage curiosity and exploring nature!
Just in safe and appropriate ways for you and the wildlife you encounter 😍

pro tip:
to avoid upsetting their sensitive gut, always wear gloves when handling and never attempt to feed 🐰
