It was an honor to speak at Washington's First Teen-Led Mental Health Summit last weekend. What made the summit so special is the conversation around teen mental health was led by young people. -- No one understands the pressures, hopes, and realities of being a teen today better than teens.

In Kirkland, our responsibility is to create safe spaces, build systems of support, and make sure teens have the resources they need. At our Kirkland Teen Union Building, teens can receive free mental health support. Our Connections Center in Kirkland offers specialized youth urgent care. And, our Regional Crisis Response Agency, will respond with mental health professionals to emergency calls. These kinds of care matter because it gives youth and families someone to call and a place to go before things become even harder.

We had some very special community members in attendance last night! Mrs. Latura's second-grade class from Peter Kirk Elementary were the recipients of our Japanese Day of Remembrance proclamation.

The class wrote letters requesting that the City honor Fred Korematsu Day. Mr. Korematsu was a Japanese American civil rights leader who courageously spoke out against the 1942 executive order that led to the incarceration of more than 120,000 people of Japanese descent during World War II.

I want to thank Mrs. Latura for instilling in her students the core values of our City: inclusivity, respect, and the welcoming of all people. She is teaching them not only history, but also the importance of civic participation and that every voice truly matters, regardless of age. Thank you students! 🍎

Thank you also to Loita Hawkinson of the Kirkland Heritage Society for sharing Kirkland specific history during the Japanese internment.
