Mission to Save the Moore-Irwin House

Mission to Save the Moore-Irwin House Join us in our efforts to preserve the historic Moore Irwin House for the people of Upper Merion and beyond.

The Moore Irwin House at 700 Moore Rd, KoP, was the headquarters of General Muhlenberg, and his troops camped along nearby Trout Creek. With the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence upon us in just 5 short years, the celebrations are sure to rival that of the 1976 Bicentennial. One thing in the plans and coming soon is a tour of the Generals' Quarters. What will people think when

they are brought to the sad sight of the Moore Irwin House, which was Muhlenberg's Headquarters? This township owned property, like so many others, has been horribly and sadly neglected. The 2008 assessment that the building could be rehabbed was ignored. Despite a solid grant opportunity for $1 million to start refurbishing, the township supervisors did not act. And here we are again, doing another architectural assessment in 2021. Are the supervisors waiting for this new group of structural engineers to tell them that the only choice is to knock it down? What are we going to tell the tens of thousands of visitors in coming years and at the 250th? Will Upper Merion let one if its few remaining historic structures be lost like so many others? We residents and area history lovers need to raise the alarm! Let the Supervisors and Township Manager Tony Hamaday know that this building has historic and cultural value and MUST be saved. More federal and state grant funding is surely available for a building of this stature. The Moore-Irwin House/Muhlenberg Headquarters is an historic treasure in our township that we should rightfully preserve be proud of and our leaders have a responsibility to see it preserved.

It's NOT too late!
This historically significant house is owned by Upper Merion Township. It is eligible for the National Register of Historic Buildings pending acceptance by the owners (the supervisors) of that honor. It is also one of four historically significant buildings recognized by the State of Pennsylvania as being at significant risk of being lost forever due to neglect.
According to the announcement by the state of Pennsylvania, "Its layered history, architectural significance, and deep community ties make it a resource worth protecting."
The Moore-Irwin House in Upper Merion is located at 700 Moore Rd near 8th Avenue. Deferred maintenance has placed this significant historic structure in dire peril.
Upper Merion Township has an opportunity to restore the historic Moore-Irwin House with grant money. There is a company excited and waiting in the wings to repurpose it. All we need is Upper Merion Township Supervisor's nod to things move forward and save it.
Preservationists and architects who have seen the building state that it is most certainly able to be preserved and repurposed. Both a National Register listing (pending acceptance by the township) and the "at-risk" designation open many doors for grant funding.
The KoP Historical Society has identified an experienced and reputable company that is eager to repurpose the building and give it a new life with a public-private partnership. This agreement would provide funds for maintenance and upkeep once it is saved.
The township has few places left pointing to our rich history. Let us hope and pray that this one will be saved.

We still need YOUR support to make sure the BID and the Supervisors follow through. But,
we noticed that the King of Prussia BID has included the renovation of the Moore-Irwin House in the booklet describing the study and plans for the Linear Park along Moore Road.
Kudos to the folks at the KoPBID for recognizing the value in the location and in the history of this wonderfull building and the Level 1 Arboretum surrounding it!

"This in-depth study, prepared by the design team of Simone Collins Landscape Architecture and Traffic Planning and Design, Inc., assessed the feasibility and options for a new trail between First Avenue and West Valley Forge Road with dedicated pedestrian infrastructure on either side of Moore Road. After the Moore Road corridor, the design team reviewed options to extend the path to the Schuylkill River Trail West (SRTW), connecting Moore Park to Valley Forge National Historical Park and the Circuit Trail Network. The proposed pedestrian and bike trail includes amenities such as seating areas, pedestrian lighting and vibrant landscaping. The study is informed by interviews with property owners and stakeholders along the proposed route."

This historic township owned building has been allowed by the township to fall into ruin, but it is far from being unsalvageable. It is recognized by the State of Pennsylvania as an historically significant builiding. It is worthy of preservation and adaptive re-use and can once again be a beautiful asset for township residents and visitors.

It has been 3 years since the last petition to Save Moore-Irwin. Sadly, the township has allowed to house to deteriorate despite the plan for trails adjacent to it, continue growth around it and available funding to preserve it. It is the only available township space in the mixed use (businesses and residentail) Moore Park area.
Even if you signed before, please lend your signature to this new petition to Save the Moore-Irwin House.
And, PLEASE share the link to help raise awareness and if you are available, come to the event on Sunday, April 14 at 3pm at Christ Church Old Swedes.
