Make your vote count!!
Red and Blue should be trumped by Qualifications and Competence. We have to transcend partisan thinking and vote in those who are best for the roles based on merit and credibility. This is especially true when you consider the school board members oversee a staggering 80% of the town’s annual budget. The right people need to steward this responsibility. A firsthand understanding of education and our district is imperative. I have both and would serve our town well.
Vote Aubrey Gonzalez, Row B, for the two-year Killingworth seat on the Board of Education.

Can we talk campaign signs for a moment?

I have gotten a good laugh out of how many people have mentioned seeing mine…everywhere. You know your signs are over the top when even kids start telling you so!

I was advised that signs are a necessary evil. So, I spent four hours on a Sunday wrestling 50
of them into Killingworth’s unyielding, rocky soil- alone and largely after dark. It was character building, I’ll tell you that!

I am sincerely grateful to the KRTC for endorsing me and providing the signs. They have certainly done the job of getting my name out there. Yet, as an unaffiliated candidate, I’ve felt conflicted.

I had hoped for nonpartisan signs. I am not a partisan person. Quite the opposite actually- I pride myself on being able to find common ground and foster collaboration. And quite frankly, I’m good at it. I’ll never stop striving for that.

So, here’s my ask….
Please don’t let a red or blue sign make up your mind. These days, if we are as evolved as we say we are, that should NOT matter. I believe ballots should look like a dot-to-dot, with circles colored next to the candidates who are most qualified for the job, regardless of line.

As for the signs, I am proud of single-handily covering the town with my name. It’s funny and surreal and it got me emotional when my closest people reached out to celebrate seeing them. Watching a vision come to life is gratifying, even if it’s not under the exact circumstances you thought.

So, when it comes to signs, I’m proud of the person behind the name on mine. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished to get to this point. But, I’d be most proud to get voted onto the board, and serve this community well.

Just to state the importance of this once more:
The school board oversees $20MM of the town’s $25MM annual budget. This is not a responsibility left to familiarity. It’s an enormous task, and should be left to nothing less than qualifications and competence.

I have both. My heart is matched only by my will. I am the best candidate for the job and will prove why. Just give me the chance. Vote for Aubrey Gonzalez, Row B, for BoE.

P.S. The sheer will it took to wrestle against Killingworth’s rocky earth for four hours amongst the wind and the ticks should earn me a few pity votes at the very least!

For those of you with the attention span, here is the story behind how I got here....

When my family moved to Killingworth from Ohio eight years ago, we knew little about Connecticut. With three school-aged sons—one with special needs on an IEP—my priority was finding a district with strong schools and strong support. After months of research and visits across the state, we chose Killingworth.

We fell in love with the town’s beauty and rural charm, but the deciding factor was the quality of its schools. After meeting with special education staff and touring the buildings, I knew my boys would be well cared for and supported here. That has proven true throughout their years at KES, HKIS, HKMS, and HKHS, where they’ve thrived academically, artistically, and socially thanks to dedicated teachers and diverse opportunities.

When my oldest left for UConn in 2022, I returned to my passion of working with youth by becoming a substitute teacher in RSD17. This allowed me to stay close to my own children while connecting with educators, students, and families across the district. The years spent subbing gave me firsthand insight into the culture, strengths, and challenges of all five schools.

After three years serving our schools, I realized my passion had outgrown my position. I stepped back from employment to avoid a conflict of interest and set my sights on running for the Board of Education. This was an intentional and purposeful choice, driven by a desire to serve our district on a greater scale. I now teach middle school math and science at St. John’s in Old Saybrook, a role that has broadened my perspective and strengthened my readiness for board service.

Learning this new role has left me with less time to campaign than I’d hoped. Still, I’m proud of the reputation I’ve built, the choices I’ve made, and the experience I bring.

In this election, you’ll see many familiar names on the ballot—this is a small town with deep roots. While familiarity matters, it shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Character matters. Conduct matters. But qualifications matter most. Too often, candidates are chosen for name recognition or political affiliation rather than proven expertise. Character should complement qualifications—especially when public trust and millions in taxpayer dollars are at stake.

The Board of Education oversees roughly $20 million of the town’s $25 million annual revenue. It’s essential that this responsibility lies with informed, transparent, and accountable leaders.

I will bring the right combination of experience and perspective to the Board. I studied special education, communications, and psychology in college before building a career in healthcare marketing then university development, including grant writing and fundraising. I’ve been a special education parent for two decades and understand the overwhelming complexities of that system. My youngest is a student at HKIS, so I remain personally invested in the health of our district.

I understand education from multiple sides- parent, educator and taxpayer. As a teacher, I see daily the challenges and opportunities in the school environment. Most importantly, I have current, relevant insight into the inner workings of our district, which I’ll use to lead thoughtful discussions and make sound decisions.

Politically, I am unaffiliated. Though endorsed by the KRTC, I do not subscribe to any party. This independence allows me to stay genuinely nonpartisan and focused on what matters most—our students.

I love this community and strive to be deeply involved. You'll find me volunteering at school events, coaching Little League, and connecting with students and families wherever I go.

I made the decision to run for the board with one clear intent: to advocate for schools that are strong, safe, and deeply connected to their students, their families, and the broader community.

Now that you know more about who I am and why I’m running, I hope you’ll consider trusting me with your vote for the two-year seat on the Killingworth Board of Education.

Hello KW neighbors….
I’m Aubrey Gonzalez and I would love your vote for the two-year seat on the Board of Education.
I’ve had the privilege of working in HK as a substitute teacher and an assistant little league coach for the past few years. Chances are, I know your children, grandchildren or young relatives. They know me as Mrs. Gonzalez or Mrs. G, either from the classroom or the dugout.
I am proud to serve the children of this community. I’m running for the two-year seat on the Killingworth Board of Education to represent our families, taxpayers and educators, but especially our kids.
With your vote, I hope to elevate and sharpen the board and to build back trust between the district and the town. We need shrewd, qualified people vetting the decisions that will impact our schools and community for years to come. Allow me to serve KW in this role. I will exercise fiscal responsibility and prudent judgement that considers all shareholders, and strive to maintain healthy, educationally excellent schools.
Please consider trusting me with your vote this election. VOTE Aubrey Gonzalez, Row B for BoE.
