For the past two years, Black Mesa United has had the honor of hosting the LeaderShift Scholars on Black Mesa for a few days of learning, connection, and growth.

We've had incredible speakers from our community who shared their knowledge, experiences, and teachings with the scholars. These moments of exchange continue to strengthen our collective future.

We are proud to see that many of the youth stay connected with BMU members even after the leadership experience that build lasting relationships and continued engagement.

From the article, an experienced shared by Jalen Panana, 2025 LeaderShift Scholar:

“It helped me see I don’t need a large amount of money to help people,” reflected 2025 LeaderShift Scholar Jalen Panana. “I can start now with the small steps … I learned how most locals on-and-off Navajo and Hopi lands had to adjust with the introduction and exit of the extractive economy. It was interesting and heartfelt to see the disturbance and imbalance of the aftermath created by mining companies…It helped me understand the importance of community morals, tradition, and mindset as they approach a just transition.”
