In 2024, Mike Kehoe won the Missouri governor's race by twenty points. It was the biggest Republican blowout in an open race there in generations.

He spent this year selling Amendment 5. It would have wiped out Missouri's state income tax, which is the biggest source of money the state runs on, and given lawmakers years to replace that revenue by taxing whatever they decided to tax.

In January he promised he would never support extending sales taxes to farming, health care, or real estate.

When the amendment was actually written, none of those protections were in it. Lawmakers would have sorted it out later, after the vote.

The Missouri Budget Project ran the numbers and found the swap would raise taxes on four out of five Missourians.

Republicans scheduled the vote for a sleepy August primary. That is generally where a thing like this passes quietly.

On Tuesday, eighty-three percent of Missourians voted no.

Amendment 4 died the same night — the one that would have made it nearly impossible for regular people to put anything on a Missouri ballot ever again.

Kehoe put out a statement saying his work is far from over.

Missouri just told him how far.

Back at work today on the campaign. It was a successful primary with a huge turnout in Platte County complete with my share of voters. I was so blessed to have so many votes even though I wasn’t running against a democratic opponent.
And after the primary parties it was time to get back to work with a winning finish line Nov. 3rd. We’ll be out knocking on doors asking for your support.
