If all goes according to plan, here's what will be new on Kalamazoo Avenue come 2028: https://bit.ly/3Pzhk1R

A month away from scheduled construction, city commissioners are dotting their i's and crossing their t's for the complete rebuild of Kalamazoo Avenue.

As part of the ongoing Streets For All initiative, on Monday evening the Kalamazoo City Commission will vote on two contracts, totaling $19.63 million, for the complete "from the ground up" rebuild and two-way conversion of downtown Kalamazoo Avenue, according to city documents.

In terms of broader planning, if approved, the contracts will represent a semi-conclusive step for the Kalamazoo Avenue portion of Streets for All that's following years of work dating back to 2019 including a year and a half of public engagement, designing, redesigning, contracts, grants and all the other miscellaneous administrative labor that goes into a major construction project.

City officials want to start construction on the street early next month and said they are ready to do so as long as the two contracts are approved at Monday's meeting.

The first contract is $2.13 million agreement with a Kalamazoo-based engineering firm Wightman to manage the construction project. The second is a $16.81 agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation for all the construction from the ground up.

On May 30, 2026, members of the Crime Reduction Team (CRT) were conducting a directed patrol to combat gun violence in the 800 block of Riverview Drive where an active Mobile Nuisance Party was taking place. During the directed patrol CRT members observed a male showing clear indicators or being armed with a firearm while participating in the Mobile Nuisance Party.

CRT members attempted to contact the male in a parking lot; however he fled on foot with two other males upon sight of police. The foot pursuit ended when the three males entered a vehicle, which was quickly detained by CRT and KDPS operations personnel who responded to assist. All three males were removed from the vehicle, each of which had an illegal firearm concealed on their person. One of the fi****ms was reported to Battle Creek Police Department as being stolen in 2024. During a subsequent search, a rifle was also found concealed inside the vehicle.

All three males, two 18-year-olds and one 19-year-old, were found to be Battle Creek residents. They were lodged at Kalamazoo County Jail for illegal weapon offenses, resisting and obstructing, and receiving and concealing stolen property.
