Only one week away for easy pick of of free supplies! crbhawaii.org/community for sign up - they will respond with an email suggesting the Kailua event for pick up based on any windward zipcode. .

Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles and the damage they cause to palms are being noticed all over Kailua. You can try to protect your trees. Your tax-payer dollars are supporting free distribution of traps, netting and pesticide (natural and synthetic). It is a kakou thing - we definitely want our neighbors to also be killing CRB… So please tell your neighbors and sign up in advance for supplies and pick up right in Kailua from experts that can answer your questions.

I hope we only need to do this for a couple years, until we have an effective biocontrol. The research shows a beetle virus that suppresses them in other parts of the Pacific kills our variety of beetle larvae 100% of the time - they just need to make sure it is as “specific” to only CRB as they think it is. So they are testing it on our good insects such as all pollinators and the one native beetle that lives on Kauai. 🤞

The tools offered through this program are only a few tools that can be utilized for CRB management. For the best success with management, it is recommended to follow an integrated pest management strategy, utlilizing multiple tools and techniques. For more information on management and integrated p...

Happy Father’s Day to all those who take on this life-long job. This was a special one as my father and the father of my boys got to see Max in his new native habitat at his lab in Australia and the reefs where the coral samples come from. We are all so proud of him.

This is to expand our mental health workforce by allowing providers who finished their coursework and are under clinical supervision to get paid by insurance while they serve patients. If you know someone in this situation, please share. We want Hawaii to be a State where mental health care providers can afford to work.

I had the pleasure of hearing 3 classes of 7th graders presented some of their work on solutions to the declines in native endangered bird populations at Hamakua Marsh. We worked with the teachers to create a unit on population constraints and dynamics that looks at real data collected near their school on bird nesting, hatching, fledging and population as well as some of the environmental factors that impact it. They came to see the situation for themselves, did research and designed all kinds of displays and podcasts to teach their school community. This replaced a unit about squirrels in England. This is more work for the teachers than pre-packages curriculum, but the kids are pretty fired up about what they learned. Hope they can see (most of) their solutions implemented in time - they gave me an idea for tweaking a planned water flow restoration from Kawainui to Hamakua. So happy for the insight I get through my non-profit in the great work being done at our public schools.

Posting this excerpt from the blessing of Ke Kauhale ‘o Luhia which expands capacity at the Waimanalo Emergency Shelter by 20 rooms with share bathroom and kitchen. Tenants will be integrated into the existing services provided to the rest of the facility. I have been trying to get this done for 5 years - not sure if adding the Homeless budget on the house side to my committee kuleana was the magic trick…. It was a low cost project since all the infrastructure was in place and there was a big, empty parking lot. Now singles in the larger units can switch over and free up space for families.

Free. Order online for however many trees you have, then pick up and receive instructions right on Kailua Monday June 29, 5-6pm. There will be a little extra for walk-in’s, but if you order ahead they will have what you need for sure. Natural (OK for food trees) and synthetic (need to keep trimmed) pesticides, netting, and traps with pheromones available. I fought for this funding, please come and use it.
