Thank you to the Peace & Justice Center for leading us in song and to all the participants who came out and helped craft these amazing lyrics to the tune The Midnight Special!
One attendee shared how heavy their heart has been that they don't even feel like singing. Another shared that when they wake up they don't feel any hope from what they hear on the news. We needed a word to rhyme with news and very soon we had the first stanza of the first verse:
Well you wake up in the morning, scrollin’ through the news,
And your heart’s a sinkin’, can’t even sing the blues.
And from there the rest of the lyrics built off of it:
Verse 1
Well you wake up in the morning, scrollin’ through the news,
And your heart’s a sinkin’, can’t even sing the blues.
All this death and destruction, sufferin’ and despair,
Can’t swim in the water, can’t even breathe the air.
Chorus
Let us hope tomorrow, will be a better day,
With the sun a shinin’, we’ll be on our way. (x2)
Verse 2
Yonder come Ms. Rosie, she seems to have a plan,
With a song in her heart, and a sign in her hand.
She’s out fighting for justice, all across the land,
Gonna bring us together, so we can take a stand.
Chorus
Verse 3
So let’s gather our neighbors, and bring our song to D.C.
Lift up all of our voices, fight for all to be free,
And our song will continue, in solidarity,
We know that nothing can stop us, when we’re in harmony.
Chorus (x2)
ENJOY!
