The Big Canoe Fire Department just took delivery of a new Stryker Motorized Stair Chair. This new piece of equipment will allow our Paramedics, EMT’s and Firefighters to move patients up and down flights of stairs more efficiently, and with less risk of injury to the patient.

The device was purchased jointly by the BCVFD and the Big Canoe POA.

Big Canoe Public Safety and the BCVFD have been preparing for the ice storm for days. We have had regular briefings, discussed various scenarios and prepared gear and equipment.

An emergency shelter has been set up in the Overlook Room of the Clubhouse (see POA email announcement).

Stay warm and stay safe.

A message from our Pickens County EMA Director. This storm has the potential to be extremely hazardous and a long duration event. Now is the time to prepare and be ready before the storms arrival.

BCVFD personnel attended an 8-hour training program on Hazardous Materials Awareness and Response at the Pickens County Emergency Operations Center in Jasper on Saturday, December 6.

This was a valuable review class, providing an opportunity to stay updated and proficient, even after 40+ years of experience in this subject matter.

It is fire hose testing season in Big Canoe !!

Every year the full-time firefighters and the volunteers unload every foot of hose from every one of the ten engines and trucks and pressure test each individual section….then reload it. This exercise is quite time consuming and very physically demanding…a 100 ft section of 5-inch hose weighs more than 100 pounds empty.

So when you drive by the station and see hundreds of feet of hose laid out, chances are we are testing.

The officer shot this morning in North Georgia is also one of our local Hero’s. Officer Brantley Worley not only is a police officer but is a Pickens County Firefighter /AEMT. Brantley is currently listed in critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers for Brantley, his family, and his fellow fire firefighters during this tough time.

It is with deep regret that we announce the retirement of two of our most experienced Volunteer Firefighters.

Bob Miller and Joe Cano have been members of the BCVFD for nine and eight years respectively. Bob is moving to Colorado later this year, and Joe, after knee surgery, etc., decided that it was best to concentrate his volunteer efforts elsewhere.

Both are Certified Support Firefighters, and they have been two of our most active volunteers. Over the years both Bob and Joe have donated hundreds of hours of their time to this community. Whether it was weekly or special training, response to calls/emergencies, or supporting community events, they could always be counted on to be there. Both also served on the BCVFD Board of Directors for multiple years.

If you should happen to see either of these fine gentlemen, please extend your hand and thank them for their extraordinary service to Big Canoe.

The Big Canoe FD and Pickens County FD conducted a live burn practice at the Big Canoe Fire Training Center on Thursday 20-March. Members of the BCVFD also participated in the fire training and provided water supply and air cylinder support.

These events are conducted at the Big Canoe Fire Training Center multiple times per year to keep our firefighters and first responders proficient in the latest firefighting techniques.
