To celebrate the love of reading, Director Coleman spent time at A Time 4 Learning Childcare for Dr. Seuss week! Fox In Socks was a hit!
"Strong communities are built in simple moments- like reading stories, sharing a laugh about silly socks or a group hug. We have to keep reminding our children that an entire village is rooting for them"

đź—Łđź—ŁJackson stands on the verge of a significant milestone: recording fewer than 100 homicides in a calendar year for the first time in over five years. This projected achievement is not a matter of chance, but the direct result of an unprecedented, citywide collaboration.
The Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement affirms that this progress is 100% a testament to the power of collective effort. This emerging success story belongs to the entire community—to the dedicated CVI (Community Violence Intervention) workers who mediate conflicts and build trust on the front lines(The REAL MVPs: Operation Good Jackson, MS Strong Arms of MS); to the community-based organizations providing essential services and hope; We can NOT say that without saying the name Stephen Brown!. To Jsu Votes for keeping our next leaders and advocates empowered, informed, and mobilized! To Jackson Public Schools and Rosaline H. McCoy, The ROCKSTAR at JPS that allows magic to happen EVERY WEEK at Lanier Jr Sr High School. Our State partners at CPS, Mrs Ta'Shia Shannon Gordon. To our partners at UMMC who heal trauma beyond the physical wounds; and to the youth groups and programs empowering the next generation, to members of the PHAST team for your commitment and to countless other community members, residents, law enforcement and city leaders. Together, we have built a strategic and intentional ecosystem focused on a single, vital mission: reducing the likelihood of violence in our city. While there is still work to be done to secure this outcome for 2025 and beyond, this headline is a powerful affirmation. It proves that when our community unites with shared purpose and commitment, we can create a safer, stronger Jackson for everyone. Our collective resolve remains steadfast as we continue this critical work. Although 1 loss is too many, we are creating and evaluating strategies and processes to protect our families, community, and youth. If you or your your organization are interested in joining in finding solutions, please reach out. Together, we have the strength.

Jackson is on track to end 2025 with less than 100 homicides, something the city has not seen in the past five years. See link below ⬇️ bit.ly/4oGtu4l

The Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Kenlanda Burns, whose life was tragically taken in Yazoo City. We also acknowledge the widespread pain and fear that such violence creates across our communities.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect, Erwin Barnes, who had a known history of domestic violence, died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a manhunt. While this brings the immediate incident to a close, it does not lessen the profound loss of Ms. Burns’ life nor the long-term impact of domestic violence on families, children, and neighborhoods.

As we grieve this tragedy, we must also use it as a sobering reminder: domestic violence is a public health crisis, and it is preventable. October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, a time to recommit ourselves to breaking the cycles of abuse and building safer pathways for survivors.

The Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement is dedicated to educating and empowering communities not just this month, but every month. As part of this commitment, ONSE will host a virtual training on the intersectionality of domestic violence and homicide—highlighting how early intervention, survivor-centered services, and community collaboration can save lives.

We call on residents, organizations, and leaders to join us in raising awareness, supporting survivors, and working collectively to end domestic violence in Jackson, Yazoo City, and across Mississippi. Together, we can prevent tragedies like this from continuing to devastate our communities.
