Readiness starts with training. Soldiers of the 834th Aviation Support Battalion recently conducted individual weapons qualification and sustainment training focused on crew-served weapons, including the M4 carbine and the M17 pistol. This hands-on training strengthens individual proficiency, confidence, and overall unit preparedness.

Training environments can be demanding, and sometimes accidents happen, but the 834th ASB medics are always ready to respond, providing immediate care and ensuring Soldiers can train safely and effectively. From mastering weapons systems to maintaining battlefield medical readiness, the 834th continues to build a force that is ready, capable, and prepared to answer the call.

Congratulations to Master Sgt. Seashore his incredible 36 years of dedicated service to the Minnesota Army National Guard and the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade. Since enlisting in 1990, Seashore has built a remarkable legacy of commitment, professionalism, and leadership while serving exclusively within the Combat Aviation Brigade. From Fox Company, 147th Aviation Battalion, to multiple roles across the 834th Aviation Support Battalion and Headquarters, he has been a constant force in aviation operations and readiness. He continues to serve in that role as the 34th CAB Telecommunications Technician, having served full-time for the past five years.

Throughout his distinguished career, Seashore deployed three times in support of overseas operations, participated in key training exercises, and completed a wide range of military education and specialty courses, reflecting his dedication to excellence and lifelong learning. His long list of awards and recognitions speaks to decades of honorable service, technical expertise, and steadfast leadership. Thank you, Master Sgt. Seashore, for your unwavering commitment to the Soldiers of the 34th CAB, the Minnesota Army National Guard, and our nation. Congratulations on an outstanding career and well-earned recognition.

Congratulations to Maj. Nathan Foster on receiving recognition for exceptionally meritorious service as the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade Chief of Operations and Airfield Manager. From leading complex current operations and command post missions to coordinating large-scale training exercises across multiple states, Foster’s leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment directly strengthened the 34th CAB's readiness and mission success. His mentorship of junior leaders, refinement of brigade processes, and dedication to excellence reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade, the Minnesota Army National Guard, and the United States Army.

Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 34th Combat Aviation Brigade, started the day strong at Camp Ripley, taking the Army Fitness Test on a chilly morning.

Despite the cold temperatures, Soldiers pushed through each event with determination, discipline, and teamwork. A great demonstration of the brigade's readiness and resilience.

Fox Company, 1-189th Aviation Regiment, conducted a Change of Command ceremony during the April drill weekend, formally marking the transition of leadership from Capt. Samuel Kneen to 1st Lt. Alec Farrell. The ceremony recognized Kneen’s dedicated leadership, commitment to Soldiers, and service to the unit throughout his command tenure. His efforts helped strengthen readiness, professionalism, and the continued success of Fox Company.

As the guidon passed to Farrell, the unit welcomed a new chapter of leadership and continued excellence. We thank Kneen for his service and contributions to the company, and we wish Farrell success as he assumes command of the team.

Over the April drill weekend, we recognized a significant leadership transition within Headquarters and Headquarters Company during a Change of Command ceremony at Camp Ripley.

Capt. Marija Ugstad displayed outstanding leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the Soldiers of HHC. Her tenure was marked by professionalism, resilience, and a focus on mission readiness, which strengthened the company and set the conditions for continued success.

As we bid farewell to Ugstad, we also welcome 1st Lt. Lukas Berndt as the incoming company commander. We are confident that his leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence will keep HHC moving forward and build on the strong foundation we've established.

Change of Command ceremonies symbolize the continuity of leadership and the enduring strength of our organization. We look forward to the continued success of HHC under Berndt’s command.

April IDT consisted of an exceptionally busy, highly productive four-day training period held at Camp Ripley. During this time, the 2-147 Assault Helicopter Battalion and the 834 Aviation Support Battalion executed a series of critical training events designed to enhance both individual proficiency and collective readiness.

Key training efforts included aerial gunnery operations, which allowed aircrews to refine targeting accuracy, coordination, and weapons employment in a dynamic environment. In addition, Soldiers conducted M4 rifle qualifications to ensure individual weapons proficiency and reinforce marksmanship fundamentals. Crew-served weapons qualifications were also completed, strengthening unit lethality and ensuring teams remain proficient in operating and maintaining these critical weapon systems.

Throughout the training period, both battalions demonstrated a high level of discipline, coordination, and operational effectiveness. The successful ex*****on of these events contributed directly to increased combat readiness and validated the units’ ability to perform mission-essential tasks in a realistic training environment.

The 2-147 Assault Helicopter Battalion proudly conducted a Change of Command ceremony during the March drill, marking the transition of leadership from Lieutenant Colonel Jed Gadient to Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Ortmann. This time-honored tradition reflects the strength of our formation, the continuity of mission, and the enduring trust placed in those selected to lead.
Under the leadership of Lt. Col. Gadient, the battalion achieved significant milestones in readiness, training excellence, and mission accomplishment. His steady command presence, commitment to developing Soldiers and leaders, and dedication to the welfare of our Families strengthened the foundation of this organization. His leadership has left a lasting and meaningful impact across the formation, and the battalion is stronger because of his service. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lt. Col. Gadient and his Family for their sacrifice, professionalism, and unwavering support.
As the battalion bids farewell to one exceptional leader, it proudly welcomes another. Lt. Col. Ortmann assumes command at a critical time as the battalion continues to build combat readiness and uphold its proud legacy as an attack aviation force. His experience, vision, and commitment to the profession of arms will guide the battalion as it continues to train, fight, and win. The Soldiers and Families of the 2-147 stand ready to support him as he leads the formation into the next chapter.

During the March drill, the unit proudly recognized two outstanding Soldiers for their promotions within the Noncommissioned Officer Corps, celebrating both their professional achievements and the family members who supported them along the way.

Sgt. Gephart was promoted to Sergeant (E-5), officially joining the ranks of the Noncommissioned Officer Corps. The ceremony was made even more meaningful by the presence of his family, including his mother Lisa, father J.T., uncle Nick, grandfather Clyde, and grandmother Karen. Sgt. Gephart had the honor of being pinned by his father and his grandfather, a proud Vietnam Veteran, making the moment especially memorable.

The unit also recognized Sgt. 1st Class Aasen on his promotion to Sergeant First Class (E-7), a significant milestone that reflects years of dedication, leadership, and commitment to the mission. The rank of Sergeant First Class represents the trust placed in a Noncommissioned Officer to lead, mentor, and develop Soldiers. He was joined by his wife, Marlana, and their 4-month-old daughter, Athena, who made the ceremony even more special as she did her very best to help punch on his new senior rank.

Promotions like these highlight not only the accomplishments of our Soldiers, but also the support of the families who stand beside them throughout their service.

Congratulations to Sgt. Gephart and Sgt. 1st Class Aasen on these well-earned promotions. We look forward to the continued leadership, mentorship, and impact both will bring to the formation and the mission ahead.

After 20 years of dedicated service, the Minnesota Army National Guard proudly recognized Staff Sergeant Hockwalt as she retired following an outstanding military career during the February drill.

Staff Sgt. Hockwalt began her service in 2005 as a 15P Aviation Operations Specialist, deploying with the 2-147 Assault Helicopter Battalion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 07–09, where she served as a flight operations specialist in the Tactical Operations Center and subject matter expert for aviation flight records. Throughout her career, she held numerous leadership and full-time positions supporting aviation operations, training, and readiness across the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade, Fort Rucker flight school, and the G32 Aviation section.

She consistently served above her pay grade, including as senior NCO of the Airspace section and during activation in support of the Minneapolis civil disturbance in 2020. Most recently, she served as a Flight Operations NCO at Aviation Brigade Headquarters, supporting missions, ranges, ceremonies, and Soldier development. In addition, Staff Sgt. Hockwalt is a graduate of the Advanced Leader Course and holder of a Bachelor of Science from the University of Minnesota.

Staff Sgt. Hockwalt leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, mentorship, and commitment to mission and Soldiers.
